China Plus One, PLI scheme throw up a rising star that shows India the way

Not long ago, there was a time when Indian businesses could not think of competing with China. In just a few years, many of them are not only competing with Chinese companies globally but have also emerged as icons of indigenous manufacturing. An Indian company, Dixon Technologies, has taken advantage of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme just when the world was moving away from China under the China+ strategy to diversify manufacturing away from China due to geopolitical tensions. Dixon, which has emerged as India’s largest electronics contract manufacturer, is buying a majority stake in Ismartu India, a firm engaged in electronics and mobile devices manufacturing. An Indian arm of a Chinese company, Transsion Technology, Ismartu India manufactures feature and smartphones for brands like Itel, Infinix and Tecno at its three factories in Noida.

China and the US reshaping their semiconductor supply chains present both challenges and opportunities for India: Chris Miller

The semiconductor chip war has intensified amid rising geopolitical tensions and strained ties between the US and China. Diversifying the chip supply chain and gaining AI chip dominance have become more important than ever. Currently, most of the world’s chips are designed in the US and manufactured in Asia. The most-sought-after advanced silicon chips are made in Taiwan and South Korea. Over 90 percent comes from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). National security concerns and having the world's best chips have prompted the US to bolster domestic chip production.  In the coming years, there is going to be more emphasis on chip design. Because most of the advances we see will accrue from better design techniques as opposed to better manufacturing techniques. A lot of innovation is happening in the packaging space. And there's also a need for diversification, because today, China is by far one of the largest players in testing and packaging, and the rest of the world is quite reliant on China in ways that bring up some serious diversity of supply risk.

India can replace China as major semiconductor manufacturer, says Taiwan FM Joseph Wu

Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu expressed his optimism that India could replace China as the major semiconductor manufacturer as "China may not be a reliable partner in high-tech production". The comments come even as Taiwan company PSMC and Tata Group have come together for India's first semiconductor fab in Gujarat's Dholera. "People have started to understand that China may not be a reliable partner in high tech production, and therefore people are looking for an alternative and when people see India, which is a democracy, which is a reliable partner, and which also provides an abundance of skilled engineers and labourers. So making investments in India or entering into cooperation with Indian electronics or manufacturing becomes a viable option," said Taiwanese Minister Joseph Wu.

IIIT-B develops tech to empower blind students, aims to promote inclusivity

According to a report published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology in 2022, there is an estimated 4.95 million blind persons and 70 million vision-impaired persons in India, out of which 0.24 million are blind children. However, this number could soon become less of a hindrance for the visually impaired as students from the International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIIT-B) developed a first-of-its-kind technology to help vision-impaired students get a seamless learning experience in physical classrooms. The idea was to create something that would help the visually impaired track what professors are teaching in live classes. The technology comes with hardware which is mounted on the finger and uses a digital board. When the student puts his/her finger on a flat surface, the board is virtually mapped on it. The vibration inside the finger device will help them trace the shape of the diagrams, figures or text on the digital board.

How Big Will the Next Tariff Hike Be?

Telecom operators in India have been waiting eagerly for the central elections or the Lok Sabha elections to be over. This is because they can only go for tariff hikes after that. The last time the Indian telecom sector witnessed a tariff hike, there was an increase of around 20-25% in the pricing of almost every plan. This time, according to an analyst (via RepublicWorld), the telcos will increase the tariffs by 15-17%. The elections will be over around June 1, 2024. The telco that is likely going to take the lead in increasing tariffs will be Bharti Airtel. While Airtel has been slowly increasing baseline tariffs in a phased manner, the telco has time and again affirmed its intention to raise tariffs. Airtel believes that the telecom sector in India doesn’t have healthy benefits. What the telco means is that the investment for the companies is extremely high, while the returns are very low. With the next tariff hike, Airtel is likely going to cross the ARPU (average revenue per user) figure of Rs 250 before the end of FY25.

Jio, Airtel likely to raise prices post 2024 Lokh Sabha Election: Everything we know so far

Major telecom operators like Airtel and Jio are likely to raise their tariff rates post the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, as per an analyst report from Antique Stock Broking. The largest democracy in the world is set to go to polls in seven phases between April 19 and June 4 with the results being declared on June 1. The analyst report quoted by PTI while calling the tariff rise as ‘imminent’ states that the telecom industry could witness a 15 to 17 percent hike in prices post the general election. Reportedly, Bharti Airtel could be the primary beneficiary of this price hike with its ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) going up from ₹208 to ₹286 by the end of FY 27. The brokerage expects Bharti Airtel's revenue to grow at twice the industry average in the next three years owing to hike in tariffs, 2G upgradation, growth of enterprise and Fibre to Home network and fall in capital expenditure after the 5G rollout. Bharti Airtel's capital expenditure is expected to be at ₹75,000 crore during the FY 24-26 period and the analysts predict there will be a ‘stark’ reduction in capex post the 5G rollout which could lead to a positive shift in the telecom sector.

Trai recommends govt funding for testing new telecom innovations as part of sandbox framework

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has proposed that the government provide funds to promising innovators who lack adequate financial support for testing new products in the communications sector, as some innovations can have the potential to bridge the digital divide. Even without government funding, entrepreneurs developing solutions for the digital communications sector will be able to test their products on live networks as part of the regulatory sandbox framework, the sector regulator said in its recommendations to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on the issue, released on Friday. The regulator, however, has said since the testing will be carried out on live telecom networks on a certain set of users, security of networks and protection of consumers must be ensured. The applicants have to keep a record of all testing steps, data, consent records, etc., for a minimum of a year after exit from the sandbox environment.

New fast-charging electric vehicle battery with a lifetime of 400,000 miles

Israeli StoreDot, which is partially owned by Volvo Cars and Polestar among others, has developed a battery that charges quickly and has a very long lifespan. The new battery charges up to 80 percent in between five and ten minutes. Thanks to the ability to undergo 2,000 charging cycles with minimal degradation, it will last for 650,000 miles. Normally, fast charging wears on batteries, causing their performance to deteriorate over time. The combination of fast charging and long battery lifespan makes this battery unique. Its silicon-dominant cell composition offers an energy density of 330Wh/kg and 860Wh/L at the stack level. This exceeds what current lithium-ion batteries can provide.

Digital Competition Bill a threat to MSMEs: India SME forum

India SME Forum (ISF), a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation for small and medium businesses, has written to the Corporate Affairs Ministry (MCA), highlighting the adverse effects of the proposed Digital Competition Bill (DCB) on MSMEs’ ability to access and compete in emerging markets. MSMEs play a vital role in India’s ambition to achieve a $5 trillion economy by 2030, especially by leveraging e-commerce for global competitiveness. However, the DCB poses a threat to MSMEs, risking their ability to realise these opportunities and hindering India’s e-commerce growth trajectory, it added. ISF had invited experts, both legal and academic, to educate its 10 million members on the impact of the DCB. The experts highlighted that the draft provisions disincentivise MSMEs to grow their businesses as they would attract deeper scrutiny by the lawmakers.
