Source India – ELCINA ESDM Portal was
formally Launched
Development of this
Online Portal is an important and significant initiative
taken by ELCINA in consultation with MeitY and has been
supported by MeitY. This idea came up during the discussions
of ELCINA’s EMS Task Force meetings where the need for
creation of a valuable platform for the Indian ESDM industry
was highlighted. ELCINA took the lead to develop this portal
under the guidance of its committee and senior officers from
MeitY.
ELCINA ESDM portal aims
to provide a B2B platform to all the companies which are
associated with electronic systems design and manufacturing
in India to list their products which are accessible to the
buyers. The portal would enable buyers to identify suitable
suppliers of inputs and services and send the enquiries
online. This will centralise information about the
capabilities of the dispersed electronics industry in the
country and become a single window of information. This
information would be available to the ESDM companies
domestically as well as seamlessly across the global supply
chain where Indian companies get connected as potential
suppliers.

Nokia Extends Fibre Broadband
Equipment Manufacturing into India
In a response to increasing demand from local as well as
international markets, telecom company Nokia announced that
it will extend manufacturing of PON optical line terminals (OLTs)
at its factory in Sriperimbudur near Chennai in India. The
company said that the pandemic-hit world has witnessed
changes in consumer behaviour, from home working to
data-rich entertainment services, which is resulting in high
demand for broadband. As per Nokia, demand for fibre is also
shifting to new regions with the Asia-Pacific region seeing
strong demand in markets like Japan, India and Southeast
Asia. This demand will be significantly seen in the form of
fibre to the home (FTTH) but there is also major demand from
mobile network operators as they deploy 5G and need
next-generation fibre in their transport networks to carry
the expected surge in data traffic, it added.

Why Global Semiconductor Companies Are
Now Preferring India to Set-up their Production Unit
Media reports have now stated that several international
semiconductor companies are now planning to set-up their
bases in India and boost the industry. For instance, Foxconn
and Vedanta announced a JV back in September last year to
begin their fabrication plant in Dholera region in Gujarat.
Tata Group on the other hand, has also been reported to
set-up their semiconductor manufacturing unit in India, as
per Tata Sons Chairperson Natarajan Chandrasekaran. Apart
from the Vedanta-Foxconn consortium, the government has
received five other bids to commence semiconductor
fabrication units such as Next Orbit Ventures that has
associated with Israel’s Tower Semiconductor and also
Singapore based IGSS Ventures. According to the experts, the
Vedanta-Foxconn consortium is likely to invest a sum of
$19.5 billion dollars, which would help various global
companies set-up their bases in the country.

Why
Foxconn-Vedanta JV Looking to Partner STMicroelectronics;
Explain Experts
The
Indian global conglomerate Vedanata and the Taiwan based
global contract manufacturer Foxconn are now expected to
partner STMicroelectronics in their upcoming semiconductor
manufacturing plant in India. This is according to some
anonymous people in the company familiar with the matter.
Back in February, when the joint venture was proclaimed,
Foxconn had said that they would be the lead associate. The
anonymous person who shared the information with the media
has also stated that the government is very much optimistic
with this JV with Foxconn that has assured to do huge
investments in India. Experts in the company added that this
association with STMicro is a necessity because in this kind
of JV, a pure semiconductor technology maker can offer huge
knowledge and skills in chip manufacturing. The government
has assured to bear 50 percent of the venture cost, coupled
with the other incentives.

Flattening Demand for PCs and
Smartphones Have Forced OMEs to Reduce Spending on
Semiconductors
The
international research firm Gartner has now released a new
survey report, which stated that the leading ten OEMs have
decreased their spendings and investments on semiconductor
in 2022 that is around 7.6 percent. This is due to the fact
that the global demand for PCs and smartphones have
flattened owing to the increasing inflations. Speaking of
total spending, BBK and Dell’s share reached 3 percent,
Lenovo 3.5 percent, Samsung Electronics 7.7 percent, and
Apple turned to be the highest spender for the fourth
consecutive time with 11.1 percent. Interestingly, most of
the OEMs decreased their spending in 2022 like HP by 18.9
percent, Apple reduced it by 2.6 percent, while Huawei did
the same by 19 percent.

For the past few decades, big tech companies are offering
