India Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement: A Win-Win for India and Australia

The Government of India and the Government of Australia signed the India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (Ind-Aus ECTA) on 2 April 2022, in the presence of the Honble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi and Honble Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Scott Morrison. The Agreement will come into effect from 29 December 2022 and several electronic components (Chapter 85 items) are either duty free or at a concessional duty of 5%. The Ind-Aus ECTA has been a historic FTA that our country is signing with a large, developed economy of the world after more than a decade. Australia is also the third OECD country after Japan and South Korea with which India has signed FTA. Under the Ind-Aus ECTA, exports from India will be getting zero duty access on 6367 tariff lines in Australia, immediately after the agreement comes into force on 29 December 2022. Currently, Indian exports face a tariff disadvantage in some category of 5% vis--vis competitors in the Australian market such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Removing this tariff disadvantage, the ECTA can enhance Indias merchandise exports significantly.

Why the Electronics Supply Chain Remains in Flux

Electronics supply chain uncertainty is perhaps one of the few things the industrys professionals can count on in the coming months. Even after two years of shortages, delays and skyrocketing costs, pinpointing the cause of disruption is not that straightforward. Economic difficulties can lead to businesses delaying or cancelling plans. Electronics executives may hold off on product debuts and emphasize their most profitable or popular products through a downturn. Consumers may also hesitate to buy higher-end electronics theyd have no qualms about purchasing during more economically stable periods. However, there are reports that indicate a surplus of certain categories of semiconductors after those components were in short supply for so long. Both chip makers and electronics goods brands have discussed high inventory levels resulting in slashed sales projections and job cuts.

University of Michigan Discovers Self-healing Semiconductors To Help Solar Panels to be More Efficient

A new press report recently published by the University of Michigan highlighted that through the process of artificial photosynthesis, a first of its kind solar panel has managed to achieve nine percent more efficiency than the earlier solar-water splitting experiments. Through artificial photosynthesis, the efficiency has been achieved by converting water into oxygen and hydrogen. The report further added that the process turned out to be a huge achievement because it is almost ten times more efficient than the previous experiments. According to a report of Interesting Engineering, Zetian Mi, U-M professor of electrical and computer engineering has spearheaded the project and he successfully compressed the size of the semiconductor, which is known to be the most priciest part of the product. Moreover, he also unleashed a self-healing semiconductor that has the ability to combat concentrated light equivalent to 160 suns.

Semiconductor Supply Chain Imbalances Will be Eased by 2024; Claims Accenture Researchers

A new survey report by Accenture has now stated that several global semiconductor executives now feel that the supply chain slump issue will be solved by 2024. Also, the global financial and consulting services companies added that semiconductor companies must be prepared to counter other pressures of the market and must put their attention on investments because that will help them to spearhead the growth. Syed Alam, Accenture global high-tech lead, said in an interview with VentureBeat that the major issues include macroeconomic effects, lingering COVID-19 challenges, the talent pipeline, supply chain issues and a lack of sufficient investment. The electronics and the automobile industry are still facing the challenge of reduced chip production, while the manufacturers are struggling to craft greater flexibility due to escalated demands on the supply chain.  In fact, there are several ongoing hurdles of the semiconductor industry that are impacting energy supplies and the entire supply chain ecosystem.

After China, Tesla cuts prices on electric vehicles for US market

Tesla has slashed prices on its top-selling electric vehicles for the U.S. market, the automaker's website showed, after it recently cut prices in China and missed Wall Street estimates for fourth quarter deliveries. The price cuts, announced late Thursday in U.S. time on the Model 3 and Model Y, ranged between 6% and 20% compared with the prices that held before the discount, according to a Reuters calculation. Taken together with price cuts announced last week in China, the move marked a reversal in Tesla's largest markets from the strategy it had pursued through much of 2022 when demand was strong and average sale prices for its electric vehicles had been trending higher.

Cyberbullying, identity theft may come under Digital Bill

As the Centre works on a modern law for the Internet ecosystem to replace the two decade old Information Technology Act, introducing online specific offences is expected to be a key focus of the upcoming Digital India Bill. The Indian Express has learnt that the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) could classify impersonation, identity theft, catfishing, and cyberbullying of children as offences under the new Bill, recognising that offences in the online world, especially social media platforms, can be unique with no equivalent in the offline world. The new Bill will replace the Information Technology Act, 2000, which is currently Indias core legal framework that regulates entities on the Internet. Offences listed in the IT Act are essentially borrowed from the offline world given that the law was passed before the era of social media and online dating platforms became commonplace. India currently does not have any laws around online-specific harms.

Vodafone Idea: Key Factors that will Affect Telcos Future

Vodafone Idea (Vi), the cash-strapped Indian telecom operator, is struggling to make ends meet. 2023 is going to be a decisive year for the company. On Jan 10, 2023, at the closing bell, Vodafone Idea's stock closed at Rs 7.25, the lowest figure in the last 18 months. Things don't look good for the company as the government is not planning a relief package any time soon, and the tariff hikes also seem slightly far off from here. Until the time other operators move, Vi can't even go ahead with the tariff hikes; it would further impact the subscriber churn rate negatively. Is tariff hikes the solution for Vodafone Idea? Well, not really. Tariff hikes would just be a very short-lived curtain that the telco would be able to use to hide its main problems. We will get to the main problems soon enough. To be very honest, the tariff issues are not the biggest contributor to where Vodafone Idea is standing today. This issue has been that the telco's networks delivered an inferior experience to customers time and againNow, while it is true that Vi's networks were awarded the fastest 4G networks in India many times, it is not all that matters.

Vodafone Idea has Not been Able to Fulfil Network Rollout Obligations

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has not been able to fulfil the network rollout obligations set by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). As per the obligations, telcos who bid for 5G spectrum in the 2022 auctions have to roll out commercial 5G services in each of the three metros within one year from the date of spectrum allotment. Further, the telcos also have to ensure that they are reaching at least one city or town in each of the 22 telecom circles with 5G within one year. While Airtel and Jio have already deployed 5G in many parts of the country, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is yet to make a difference in this area.

India to become major exporter of telecom equipment in 2-3 years: Ashwini Vaishnaw

India will become a major exporter of telecom equipment in the next two to three years and the government is working to achieve that goal, communications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday. The statement from the minister follows the governments meeting with 42 companies including Nokia, Samsung, Jabil, HFCL and Tejas Networks, among others, last month, which got approval for the production linked incentive (PLI) and design-linked incentive (DLI) schemes for domestic manufacturing of telecom and networking equipments. In February 2021, the government had introduced the PLI scheme for manufacturing of telecom and networking equipment with an outlay of Rs 12,195 crore over a five-year period. The government in June last year approved 31 companies, including Dixon Technologies, Nokia India and Foxconn, to manufacture telecom equipment under the scheme.

Ultra-Long Battery Life Is Coming Eventually

IF THERE WAS any product revealed at CES last week that pushed battery life claims to a whole new leveland raised some eyebrows tooit was HyperXs pair of 300-hour headphones. This is up from 30 hours per charge in HyperXs previous model, the Cloud II Wireless. A 10-fold improvement in battery life over a short time period is practically unheard of in consumer electronics. HyperX declined to share specific details as to how it accomplished this leap, except to say that it deployed a combination of battery and chip technologies and that it updated its dual chamber technology and drivers to accommodate a 1,500-mAh lithium-polymer battery.

Budget 2023 may announce an industrial area development scheme for MSMEs

The Union Budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024 may come up with an industrial area development scheme for MSMEs for upgradation of existing industrial areas with basic infrastructure and develop new industrial areas, as per a report by Mint. The industrial areas in question would be industrial parks designated especially for the small businesses, the report added, citing two people aware of the development. It also noted that the centre would provide the required financial support for setting up and upgradation of the industrial areas. To finance these projects, multilateral lenders such as the Asian Development Bank and International Financial Corporation of the World Bank would also be asked to participate in addition to getting support from the states, and allowing a state implementing agency to set up the projects.

Lending 2.0: How technology and data are easing credit access for MSMEs

Technology and data intertwined to provide formal lenders with necessary insights into the performance of a business is beginning to make an impact in lending to MSMEs. Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and particularly banks are gradually coming to terms with the fact that collateral or balance sheet-based lending is turning out to be a flawed model in lending as emerging businesses neither have enough assets to pledge nor they have a strong balance sheet, unlike large businesses who probably have both. Hence, real-time data around revenue, business costs, manpower, past growth, compliance, losses, export-import, and more is proving to be a great surrogate for balance sheets and collaterals to meet credit needs of the sector that accounts for around 30 per cent of the countrys gross domestic product.

MSME Minister Narayan Rane on Monday launched the web portal for the Rs 6,062.45-crore World Bank-assisted central government scheme Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) for MSMEs, over six months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme. Rane launched the portal at the Regional Conference on Sustainable Development of MSMEs in Northeast Region in Agartala to scale up the implementation capacity and coverage of MSMEs in the country, MSME Ministry said. The scheme was originally announced back in 2020 by the government and the World Bank to support Covid-hit MSMEs in the country. Out of the total schemes limit, Rs 3,750 crore was approved by World Bank in June 2021 while the balance of Rs 2312.45 crore would be funded by the government. The scheme targets to improve the performance of 5.55 lakh MSMEs, according to a World Bank statement in June 2021.

Udyam Registration: 81,000 MSMEs registered in Kerala in last 6 months

In the past six months, 81,000 micro, small or medium enterprises (MSME) sought Udyam Registration from Kerala. With this, the total number of MSMEs that took Udyam Registration in the state has reached 3.2 lakhs. The sudden upsurge in new registrations is due to the government's year of enterprises project. Even though Udyam registration is not mandatory for starting new MSMEs, government recognition ensures investors receive subsidies and other benefits. Among districts, Ernakulam tops with 50,648 MSMEs, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (41,268) and Thrissur (32,689). Only Wayanad (7,867) and Idukki (9,161) have a total registration below the 10,000 mark.
