Moving fast from being biggest defence importer to big exporter: Modi

India’s defence imports have decreased by about 21% in the last four to five years and this has happened in such a short time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday while stating that we are moving fast from being the “biggest defence importer to a big exporter”. “Our defence exports have increased seven times in the last eight years. Very recently, our countrymen were filled with pride when they came to know that last year, we had achieved defence exports worth ₹13,000 crore and of this 70% was from the private sector,” Mr. Modi said speaking at the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) seminar ‘Swavlamban’. Talking of the push for domestic defence manufacturing, Mr. Modi said in the last eight years, they have not only increased the defence budget, but also ensured that this budget is utilised for the development of the defence manufacturing ecosystem within the country. “Today, a major part of the budget is earmarked for the purchase of defence equipment from Indian companies only,” he stated.

How India is trying to win the semiconductor race, fighting decades of challenges & setbacks

India, which currently imports 100 per cent of its chips, was hit hard by the worldwide chip shortage, exacerbated by Covid and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Like the rest of the world, the country is keen to achieve some chip self-sufficiency. Last December, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) launched the ‘India Semiconductor Mission’ to enable the country’s “emergence as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design”, with a total budget of Rs 76,000 crore (about US$10 billion). In April, the government also set up a panel to support start-ups and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in the sector. India wants to play catch-up too, for reasons that are also geopolitical. Manufacturing is currently concentrated in countries like Taiwan, which remains under the threat of a possible invasion from China. Another semiconductor hub, South Korea, is constantly under the threat of war from its neighbour North Korea. This April, for the first time in India’s history, a Prime Minister inaugurated a conference just about semiconductors, ‘SemiconIndia 2022’, sending a clear message that the tiny chips had become important enough for the country’s premier to put his face to.

Dixon Technologies: From a single factory in 1993 to a Rs 10,700 crore electronic manufacturer for the world:

As I entered the first basement of the seven-storeyed Padget Electronics factory in Phase 2, Noida, I was offered an anti-static coat and shoe covers. As we passed through the metal doors, a blast of air hit us—another sanitisation protocol—as we were about to enter a dust-free zone. In front of me was a sea of machines spread across 20,000 sq ft, with close to 600 employees. I was standing in a mobile phone manufacturing unit, or that’s what I thought. But to my surprise, the first basement was only working on manufacturing the motherboards of the device. “Operations on this floor run 24x7 since they are completely automated. Our machines can manufacture 40,000 units per day,” says the floor operations manager. Since it was an automated unit, there were fewer employees, with most focusing on quality checks. The rest of the assembly took place on the other floors, each with close to 2,000 people. This was one of the 17 manufacturing units across the country—from Noida in Uttar Pradesh to Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh—that one of India’s largest electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies, Dixon Technologies, runs. It has expanded from CRT televisions (TV) to consumer electronics, lighting, home appliances, mobiles and a lot more, growing into a ₹10,700-crore powerhouse that is valued at ₹20,000 crore on the stock market.

Defence ministry to allow private companies to develop military helicopters

According to South Block officials, this collaboration will be tested in the development and manufacture of Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH), which will ultimately replace all Russian built Mi-17 and Mi-8 helicopters in the Indian military’s present inventory. The IMRH will have a 13 tons take-off weight and will perform with the Indian armed forces in air assault, air attack, anti-submarine, anti-ship, military transport and VVIP roles. It is understood that Indian private sector companies have already shown their eagerness to participate in the project with the Defence Ministry telling them to start manufacturing in the next seven years. The French Safran has already signed an MoU with Indian HAL on July 8, 2022, to form a new joint venture company to develop, produce and support the IMRH engine including the naval variant.

Production-linked incentive scheme can add 4% to GDP annually

The production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme, which seeks to boost manufacturing in key areas by offering nearly Rs 2.4 lakh crore in incentives over the next five years, can add 4 per cent to the GDP annually in terms of incremental revenue, says a report. So far, the scheme has seen maximum response from the electronics, auto components, and pharma sectors, according to Emkay Investment Managers. The PLI scheme has the potential to add nearly 4 per cent to GDP per annum in terms of incremental revenue if fully realized. Manufacturing companies are adding capacities due to robust returns and this is evident from the number of new manufacturing companies registered. Registration of manufacturing companies has shot up to the highest ever in the last seven years and the share of manufacturing companies in total registrations is also at almost highest level since the past decade.

India one of the key markets, says Nothing's Carl Pei

London-based startup Nothing's CEO Carl Pei, formerly the founder of OnePlus, has said that India will be one of the most important markets for its smartphones, given the country's sheer size. Speaking to ET, Pei said that being a small player offers Nothing an opportunity in the smartphone market. He added that his biggest learning from his past stint with OnePlus was product differentiation.  The company officially forayed into the smartphone market with the launch of Nothing 1 Android-based mid-premium device. Nothing is manufacturing its smartphone locally and will sell in India through e-commerce major Flipkart.  The UK-based company's backers include Google parent Alphabet's venture capital arm, EQT Ventures, and former Apple designer Tony Fadell. Adani group to participate in 5G spectrum auction, to foray into telecom sector

Four companies, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi) and an Adani Group entity have put in applications to participate in India's first auction of 5G airwaves starting July 26. At press time, ET’s queries to the Adani Group went unanswered. However, its participation was confirmed by sources familar with the matter. News agency PTI also reported, quoting sources, that an Adani entity had bid. Under India’s telecom regulations, the Adani entity would require a unified access service (UAS) permit from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to participate in the 5G airwaves sale.  Shares of group flagship Adani Enterprises closed around 0.8% higher at Rs 2,293.05 on BSE Friday. Top industry executives and analysts said Adani's potential entry could boost competition levels in the upcoming 5G airwaves sale that till recently was expected to see muted bidding, given the ample spectrum on sale and the presence of just two major bidders in Jio and Bharti Airtel, with cash strapped Vi likely to be a fringe player. Under the Notice Inviting Applications (NIA) – which outlines the auction rules - Friday (July 8) was the deadline for submission of applications.

Vodafone Idea to participate in private 5G networks space in meaningful manner

Vodafone Idea, India’s third largest telecom operator, said that it will be fully positioned to participate in the private networks space in a “meaningful manner” even as it continues trials with its industry partners in the country. “...there are some different experiences that we have seen in different markets of how private networks have shaped up in some markets..there are enterprises that have really taken to it. And, in some markets, they have not. We believe that the initial use case would be largely driven more by larger organizations which have more captive requirements, the mass proliferation could possibly be a bit more on the longer timeframe,” Arvind Nevatia, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Vodafone Idea told ET exclusively. “This would definitely be an area where we would be fully positioned to participate in it in a meaningful manner,” he added.

Telcos, tech cos headed for battle in hiring talent as 5G auction nears

After sparring over the control of 5G spectrum for captive private networks, telecom and technology companies are set for another battle: for hiring talent. With 5G services rollout on the anvil, and captive private networks becoming a reality, telcos will look to beef up their workforce. The talent pool that they will be targeting overlaps with where tech companies are also looking to hire from. “Tech companies have been hiring engineers for (developing) 5G use cases. But now with 5G rollout drawing near, telcos will also require a lot of technology professionals,” said Sunil C, chief executive at TeamLease Digital, a staffing firm.  Both tech and telecom companies are looking to hire professionals with expertise in areas like infrastructure development, equipment, network operations, spectrum services and telephone services to carry out jobs like network management, testing, and software development. Meanwhile, both tech and telecom companies have already started reskilling and upskilling their existing workforce in anticipation of the demand for these roles.

Direct spectrum allocation to tech firms may hit 5G airwave demand at auction

The latest government regulations that would allow large tech companies to set up parallel panIndia captive 5G networks, bypassing telecom carriers, would dampen demand for critical Cband (3.3-3.6 GHz) airwaves in the upcoming 5G auction, telcos have said. The new rules for captive private network rollouts announced on Monday would degrade the business case for carriers to invest strongly in airwaves and next-generation mobile broadband network deployments, telecom industry executives told ET. The Department of Telecommunications’ decision to undertake demand studies and then seek recommendations from the sector regulator could severely delay direct spectrum assignments to enterprises and give telcos a first-mover advantage in the captive 5G networks game, they said.

India proposes right to repair framework for mobile phones, consumer durables

India has proposed to introduce a right to repair law, aiming to provide consumers the ability to have their devices repaired by third parties to fight the growing “culture of planned obsolescence” in a move that follows similar deliberations in the U.S. and the U.K. The Indian Department of Consumer Affairs said Thursday that it had set up a committee to develop a right to repair framework. The committee identified mobile phones, tablets, consumer durables, automobiles and farming as important sectors for the framework, the ministry said. “The pertinent issues highlighted during the meeting include companies avoiding the publication of manuals that can help users make repairs easily,” the ministry said in a statement. The committee is chaired by Nidhi Khare, additional secretary of consumer affairs; its other members include industry bodies and stakeholders, including the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), as well as various consumer activists and organizations.

How is the Russia-Ukraine crisis affecting the TV industry in India?

MT in conversation with Arjun Bajaaj, CEO and Founder of Daiwa, sheds light on the TV manufacturing industry and how the ongoing Russa-Ukraine crisis affects it. “The recent Chinese shutdown, as well as the Russia-Ukraine crisis, have had an influence on the semiconductor chip scarcity. Because India relies on China for semiconductors and Russia is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of rare metals required in semiconductor manufacturing, this, along with the existing COVID-afflicted semiconductor scarcity, has had a negative impact on the sector,” said Arjun Bajaaj, CEO and Founder of Daiwa. During these years, the most popular size TV in India was 32″ since consumers were also price concerned due to market pessimism. However, the 43″ and 55″ UHD screens have recently gained popularity among customers due to their promising viewing experience.

Most companies are now planning their production monthly depending on inventory levels.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that private sector is our ‘partner in progress’ as he highlighted the efforts made by the government to promote this idea.  He was speaking at the first Arun Jaitley memorial lecture on Friday.  “The trust for both the private and public sectors has brought about immense optimism about the India growth story,” he added.  He stressed that his government hasn’t allowed ‘populist impulses come in the way of policy-making’.  Comparing the responses of many counties during the outbreak of covid-19, he said the world announce bailout packages for a demand-driven recovery, but we adopted a ‘people-first’ approach, under which we sought to protect the vulnerable individuals as well as MSMEs.  “Now, we can clearly see the difference between the recovery in India and that in other countries,” he added. PM Modi said that several advanced countries, including the US and in Europe, that had rolled out massive bailout packages to spur demand are not just witnessing runaway inflation but are staring at recession.

“Indian Printed Circuit Board Industry & Market Research Report

The evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of the device.

  • By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104 billion in 2015

  • Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still dependent on imports.

  • Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare board PCBs and the populated PCBs)

  • Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30% of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.
