Production  -Linked Incentive Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware notified vide Gazette Notification No. CG-DL-E-30052023-246165 dated May 29, 2023 offers a production linked incentive to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments in the value chain.

The PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware is expected to result in broadening and deepening of the manufacturing ecosystem by encouraging the localisation of components and sub-assemblies and allowing for a longer duration to develop the supply chain within the country. Additionally, the scheme provides increased flexibility and options for applicants, and is tied to incremental sales and investment thresholds to further incentivise growth. Furthermore, semiconductor design, IC manufacturing, and packaging are also included as incentivised components of the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware.

The Scheme shall extend an average incentive of around 5% on net incremental sales (over base year) of goods manufactured in India and covered under the target segment, to eligible companies, for a period of six (6) years. The Target Segment under PLI shall include (i) Laptops (ii) Tablets (iii) All-in-One PCs (iv) Servers and Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF).

Foxconn in talks to set up 4-5 semiconductor fab units in India: Report

Taiwanese major Foxconn has told the government that it wants to establish at least four to five semiconductor fabrication lines in India, a media report said citing people aware of the development. The move comes after the firm announced its decision to withdraw from a $19.5 billion semiconductor joint venture with Indian metals-to-oil conglomerate Vedanta. The world's largest contract electronics maker signed a pact with Vedanta last year to set up semiconductor and display production plants in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home state of Gujarat.

Why Gujarat Has Turned Into An Ideal Destination For Setting-up Semiconductor Manufacturing

After the government has invited a second round of applications to set-up semiconductor and display fabs under the ‘Modified Semicon India Program’, numerous global chip manufacturers have geared up to set up their production facility in Gujarat. The recently approved Micron Technology and Vedanta Foxconn JV have already announced to begin their units in the state. But, the point is why are all these firms selecting Gujarat? Many have opined this to be political as Gujarat is the home to PM Modi, but industry experts refuted this allegation. According to them, these upcoming semiconductor ventures are likely to generate thousands of jobs and earn revenues in billions of dollars. All these give a crystal-clear idea that Gujarat is going to be the next semiconductor hub in Asia.

China Says Special Licenses Will be Required to Export Germanium and Gallium

Amid the ongoing geopolitical scuffle with the US, China has now undertaken some strict export control measures. As per media reports, China is curbing exports of two key materials germanium and gallium that are mostly utilized in manufacturing computer chipsets. China, which is known as the globe’s largest producer of metals, will unleash special licenses from the coming month to export these metals. According to trade experts, China has taken this decision in retaliation to USA’s strategies of export ban of key semiconductor technologies and equipment. In fact, the US is also trying hard to persuade its allies such as the Netherlands, Japan, and India to stand against trade with China.

A Mint analysis found that in the first quarter of the financial year, wage costs as a share of revenue increased for all three companies to a record high in the last at least five years.

IT rules against fake news sort of diktat, no chance to justify content: HC

The Bombay high court on Thursday said the recently-amended Information Technology rules that empower the Centre to act against fake, false and misleading information on social media was "sort of a diktat" as it does not give an opportunity to justify or defend the content. A division bench of Justices Gautam Patel and Neela Gokhale sought to know what constitutes a government business under the amended rules as it referred to the recent political developments in Maharashtra where "one party is moving to the other". The bench also questioned as to why under the amended rules, the government has taken the 'loco parentis' (regulation or supervision by an administrative authority) only for content pertaining to government business and not for every information or content posted on social media.

JioBharat can get 100 mn subs to Jio, delay tariff hikes for Airtel, Vi

Reliance Jio's new internet enabled 4G featurephone at 999 could disrupt the 2G market and help Jio gain market share by revenue as well as gain about 100 million subscribers, said brokerage houses. With the JioBharat phone, the No 1 carrier is once again aiming at the bottom of the pyramid which is bound to bring to halt any incremental tariff increases by Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea or any tariff corrections, which will be a negative impact on the No 2 and No 3 carriers. Since Jio's launch in 2016, India's active 2G subscriber base has declined by nearly 70% to 249 million driven by a rise in smartphone penetration but also the JioPhone launch in 2017, which helped migrate over 100 million 2G featurephone subscribers to 4G.

Tesla eyes investment in India: Plans to set up electric vehicle factory and export hub

Tesla is currently in discussions with the Indian government regarding an investment proposal to establish a factory capable of producing approximately 500,000 electric vehicles on an annual basis, as reported by the Times of India, citing government sources. Led by billionaire Elon Musk, Tesla is also exploring the possibility of utilizing India as a manufacturing hub to export cars to nations in the Indo-Pacific region, according to the same report. According to the report, the vehicles from Tesla will have a starting price of 2 million rupees ($24,400.66). This price point is more than double the cost of India's most affordable electric vehicle, the MG Comet, and half a million rupees higher than the Tata Nexon EV, which currently holds the position of the highest-selling electric car in the country.

US EV market struggles with price cuts and rising inventories

The U.S. electric vehicle market is growing, but not fast enough during the latest quarter to prevent unsold EVs from stacking up at some automakers' dealerships or to allow Tesla to avoid new price cuts, according to analysts and industry data. Rising inventories and price-cutting could represent only a short-term pause in EV market growth. But they could be signals that boosting U.S. EV sales above the current 7% market share level will be more costly and difficult than expected, even with federal and state subsidies. Automakers North America have billions of dollars in EV-related investments riding on how the next several quarters play out. If production of EVs continues to outpace demand, automakers will have to choose between slashing prices and profit margins, or slowing assembly lines.

The government has begun working on the third phase of the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles (FAME III) financial support scheme, which is likely to cover hydrogen-powered vehicles, additional support for electric three-wheelers and a curtailed version for two-wheelers, said officials. The first two phases of the FAME scheme supported proliferation of electric vehicles in the country. Electric two-wheelers benefited the most from the scheme, which initially offered a 40% subsidy on the sale price of the vehicles. The support was trimmed to 15% towards the last year of the FAME II scheme in a bid to spread the remaining funds to a larger number of beneficiaries.

Global Foldable Smartphone Market Continues to Expand, Underpinned by China

According to the Counterpoint Research Foldable Tracker and Foldable Insight Report, the global foldable smartphone market increased 64% YoY in Q1 2023, based on sell-in volume, to reach 2.5 million units. The performance of the newly launched next-generation Sony PSVR2 (PlayStation VR2), along with the price reduction of the Quest 2 by Meta, saved the global market from a more drastic decline. Meta was the best-selling global XR headset brand during Q1 2023 with the Quest 2 as its long-time best-performing VR headset. The Quest series has cumulatively shipped more than 20 million units as of Q1 2023, with the Quest 2 contributing 18 million units.
