Apple to export made-in-India AirPods
to US, Europe from April

AirPods will be the second product after the
iPhone that Apple will be exporting from India, with
shipments of two models starting from April in small
quantities, with a ramp up expected in the next 3-4 months,
industry executives aware of the matter told ET. Apple’s
contract manufacturer Foxconn is assembling AirPods at its
new Hyderabad facility. Foxconn had announced an investment
of $400 million to set up the factory in August 2023. Apple
is making small quantities of the base AirPods models —
AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 (with Active Noise Cancellation) for
exports to markets like the United States, Europe and others
from the Foxconn facility at Hyderabad. “AirPods are going
to be shipped out starting April. This is not for the
domestic market right now, but domestic demand will be met
eventually,” said another executive, adding that production
will be in small quantities for now. According to industry
executives and market trackers, Apple has plans to
eventually shift more products out of China as the trade
environment becomes more uncertain and costlier for Apple to
continue production in China.

India PC shipments up 3.8% at 14.4 mn
in 2024, HP leads with 30% share: IDC
Shipments of personal computers grew 3.8 per
cent on a year-on-year basis to 14.4 million driven by
demand for gaming and AI-powered PCs, market research firm
IDC said on Monday. IDC India, South Asia and ANZ, associate
vice president for devices research, Navkendar Singh said
the weakening rupee can lead to an increase in device costs,
which can impact the price-sensitive SMB (small and medium
businesses) and consumer segments but despite all
challenges, the India PC market is most likely to witness a
low single-digit growth in 2025. The growth in the Indian
consumer PC market has been on an upward trajectory, driven
by gaming and AI-powered PCs. HP led the market with 30.1
per cent market share in 2024 and 30 per cent share in the
December quarter despite a decline of about 1 per cent in
annual and 1.8 per cent in quarterly supplies, as per IDC
estimates. Lenovo and Dell followed HP with market share of
17.2 and 16.1 per cent in 2024 with year-on-year (YoY)
growth of 7.3 per cent and 8.1 per cent, respectively.

Foxconn reports 13% drop in Q4 profit
amid weak consumer electronics sales

Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision
Industry, reported a 13% decrease in profit for the fourth
quarter, attributed to a weak performance in its consumer
electronics division. This drop was despite the strength in
its AI server segment business. Foxconn, the world’s largest
contract electronics maker, is Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s top
iPhone assembler and Nvidia’s AI server maker. For the
period of October-December, the net profit came in at
T$46.33 billion ($1.41 billion), falling short of analysts’
average forecast of T$54.4 billion. This estimate was based
on a consensus from 15 analysts provided by LSEG. Despite
the drop in profit, Foxconn announced a 15.2% increase in
its fourth-quarter revenue in January, reaching a record for
that quarter due to strong sales of AI servers. Looking
ahead, Foxconn expects its performance for the first quarter
to exceed the average level of the past five years. The
company also anticipates strong year-over-year growth but
does not provide numerical guidance.

India's electronics manufacturing
sector grapples with uncertainty over Trump's tariff threat

Global markets in the red. Fears of a US
recession. A raging tariff war. Supply chains in disarray.
Companies grappling with uncertainty. Governments on
tenterhooks. It hasn't even been two months since Donald
Trump was sworn in as US President and it has been more
dramatic than an episode of his reality show The Apprentice.
On March 5, Trump underlined this with his plan for
reciprocal tariffs on countries such as India and China. In
the past, Trump has gone so far as to call India a “tariff
king.” Last month, during a joint press conference with
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the White House, Trump had
said that India has “been very strong on tariffs.” As an
example, he said that a 70% tariff on US cars going into
India “makes it pretty much impossible to sell those cars.”
Though Trump specifically mentioned the auto sector and
didn't refer to electronic goods in his address to Congress,
Indian electronics are a key item imported by US tech firms.
Apple and others have been rapidly expanding their
manufacturing presence in India but tariffs threaten to
drive up their overall costs and squeeze the advantage of
making in India.

Government not privatising telecom
firms BSNL and MTNL, says minister

The government is not privatising state-run
telecom firms Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and Mahanagar
Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL), Minister of State for Rural
Development and Communications
Pemmasani
Chandra Sekhar said on Wednesday. Replying to a question in
Parliament, Sekhar said that last month, the government had
approved an additional capital expenditure plan of Rs 6,982
crore (Rs 69.82 billion) for BSNL. In February, the Union
Cabinet reportedly approved Rs 6,000 crore (Rs 60 billion)
towards 4G network expansion of MTNL and BSNL, according to
a CNBC Awaaz report. In January, a Reuters report indicated
that the government decided to abandon its ambitious
privatisation plans for several state-owned enterprises,
including MTNL. This shift in policy comes despite the
initial 2021 announcement to privatise most state-run
companies, including sectors sensitive to national interest.

Satcom policy needed: Govt must
streamline processes for satellite telecom

India’s two top telecom companies, Reliance
Jio and Bharti Airtel, have, in a surprise development,
announced tieups with American space technology company
SpaceX, in which cofounder Elon Musk holds a majority stake.
The partnerships would enable Starlink, a fully owned
subsidiary of SpaceX, to bring its satellite broadband
service to India. Starlink, which already operates in 120
markets worldwide, is expected to come with international
expertise in providing high-speed and low-latency internet
connectivity. OneWeb, majority owned by the Bharti group,
and Reliance Jio are geared up to launch their respective
satellite broadband services in India. While the industry is
in a state of readiness, satellite telecom service cannot
take off in India unless a policy is framed. Since satellite
telecom offers promise to significantly transform the
landscape of internet connectivity by reaching the remote
and rural areas, which have remained broadband-deprived thus
far, the government and the regulator — the Telecom
Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) — must quickly finalise
the rules and guidelines for the service.

India’s telecom subscriber base rises
to 1.18 billion in December, Jio leads growth

India’s total telephone subscriber base grew
marginally to 1,189.92 million in December 2024, with
Reliance Jio leading in both mobile and fixed-line
additions, according to a report released by the Telecom
Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday. The country
had 1,187.15 million subscribers in November, marking a
slight increase. Jio remained the frontrunner in broadband
services with 476.58 million subscribers, followed by Bharti
Airtel (289.31 million) and Vodafone Idea (126.38 million).
Urban telephone subscriptions rose to 663.37 million in
December, up from 659.87 million in November. However, rural
subscriptions saw a dip from 527.27 million to 526.56
million during the same period. The wireless subscriber base
increased from 1,148.65 million to 1,150.66 million,
reflecting a modest 0.17% monthly growth. Wireless
teledensity also edged up to 81.67% from 81.59% in November.

Govt sets tough conditions for Elon
Musk's Starlink to enter India
The Indian government has directed Elon
Musk’s satellite communications venture, Starlink, to
establish a control centre in India. This move aims to
enable authorities to suspend or shut down communication
services in sensitive or troubled areas when necessary to
maintain law and order, according to top sources cited by
TOI. As per the TOI report, the government has also outlined
security requirements, including allowing law-enforcement
agencies to intercept calls through official channels when
required. These directives come as Starlink’s application
for a satellite communications licence reaches the final
stage. The company has been working on agreements with
Reliance Jio and Airtel for marketing, deployment, and
network enhancement. A control centre in India is considered
necessary to handle law-and-order situations that may
require immediate suspension of satellite communication
services.

BluSmart's cofounder Anmol Singh Jaggi, is facing liquidity
issues, according to an Economic Times report. HT.com cannot
independently verify the authenticity of the information
contained in the report. BluSmart's Jaggi had also denied
holding such acquisition talks with Uber. Uber is a direct
competitor, with its service called ‘Uber Green’ which the
company is looking to expand. BluSmart's over 5,000 strong
electric vehicle fleet in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru
can help Uber achieve just that. These same vehicles which
are mainly from Tata Motors and MG Motor, are owned by
Gensol Engineering and leased to BluSmart, according to the
report which added that BluSmart also has a programme to
lease cars from individuals.

MSME loans in Kerala poised to cross
Rs 1 trillion
The state government’s aggressive drive to
promote entrepreneurship through micro, small, and medium
enterprises (MSME) is yielding desired results, with bank
lending to the sector set to cross Rs 1 trillion (Rs 1 lakh
crore) this fiscal. Total loans outstanding to the MSME
sector in Kerala stood at Rs 92,175.63 crore as on December
31, 2024, a robust growth of 38% from Rs 66,876 crore in
December 31, 2022, as per the data released last week. The
growth is significant as it indicates that credit is more
accessible to the sector now. Lending to the MSME sector had
shown an anaemic growth of just 1.22%, from Rs 60,880 crore
to Rs 61,623 crore, in a year until December 2020 and 2021,
respectively. “We expect the advances to MSMEs to cross Rs 1
lakh crore by the end of this financial year. Earlier, it
was very difficult to get bank loans. We have now seen a big
difference in the banks’ approach towards the sector in
recent years,” said A Nizarudeen, state president, Kerala
State Small Industries Association.

MSME industry bodies urge RBI to tweak
norms for ecommerce exports
Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME)
industry bodies have requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
for certain changes in the regulations for ecommerce
exports. These MSME bodies met the central bank in Ahmedabad,
Gujarat, last week. “The industry bodies told the RBI that
the current system of manually matching shipping bills with
inward remittances (IRMs) is impractical for high-volume
ecommerce exports,” an industry source privy to the
development said. The source noted that they have requested
the RBI to develop an automated reconciliation system within
the Export Data Processing and Monitoring System (EDPMS),
leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, to match
IRMs with shipping bills based on exporter records, even
when amounts vary due to marketplace fees or refunds. “This
system should also allow bulk uploads of transactions,
reducing the need for exporters to handle each bill
individually. Additionally, the requirement for CA
certificates for small exporters should be removed,
replacing it with self-declaration forms for MSME with an
annual turnover of ₹5 crore or less,” the source said.
