The AI boom is creating a new chip problem for carmakers

Mint | 12 March 2026

India’s automobile industry could face another semiconductor shortage as the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure redirects chip production. Manufacturers are increasingly prioritising high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a key component for AI data centres, reducing the availability of conventional memory chips used in vehicles. The tightening supply has begun pushing up prices and raising concerns among automakers. This potential disruption follows earlier challenges for the sector, including the rare-earth magnet supply crunch caused by China’s restrictions and the global semiconductor shortage experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic between 2020 and 2022.

Gulf war shadow: India's $11 billion mobile phone export success story now faces a $3 billion challenge

Mint | 13 March 2026

India’s mobile phone export growth is expected to face setbacks due to the prolonged impact of the conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted consumption patterns, imports and freight movement across the Gulf region. Analysts from Kotak Institutional Equities, including Suvodeep Rakshit and Swarupjit Palit, estimated that electronics exports could decline by $2–3 billion. The region accounts for a significant share of shipments, with mobile phones alone contributing about $3.1 billion in exports in FY25, making electronics manufacturing services companies particularly vulnerable to short-term disruptions.

Electronics industry flags inverted duty on capital goods

Financial Express | 03 March 2026

Electronics manufacturers have urged policy adjustments during a post-Budget consultation with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) regarding the ₹40,000-crore expansion of the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). Industry representatives highlighted problems caused by the inverted duty structure, where parts, components, and sub-assemblies used to build capital equipment often face higher import duties than the finished equipment itself. This discourages local production of machinery and tooling. Companies such as Dixon Technologies, Tata Electronics, ICEA, Vishay Components, and ASM Technologies welcomed the scheme’s expansion but warned that unresolved structural cost issues could limit its effectiveness in boosting domestic value addition.

AI disruption hits India's core IT revenue model, but new money-making avenues emerge

The Economic Times | 09 March 2026

Indian IT companies experienced strong growth between 2020 and 2024, driven by global investments in cloud migration and digital transformation, but momentum weakened in 2025 amid demand uncertainty. Firms reported slower revenue expansion, delayed deal closures and pressure on margins due to wage inflation and rising onsite costs. Geopolitical tensions also reduced discretionary technology spending among clients in the US and European Union. Reflecting these challenges, the Nifty IT index declined sharply in 2025 and continued to underperform the broader Nifty 500 index into 2026.

Moneycontrol | 11 March 2026

The Government of Karnataka was considering the inclusion of artificial intelligence and digital transformation guidelines in its upcoming MSME policy to help local industries adapt to emerging technological and market challenges. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises accounted for nearly 97 percent of industrial units in the state and played a major role in employment generation. Recognising their economic importance, the government initiated efforts to design a policy focused on modernisation. The proposed framework aimed to strengthen productivity, competitiveness and technological preparedness among MSMEs.

Centre's MSME greening scheme sees just 3.7% disbursal

Mint | 14 March 2026

The Centre’s MSME greening scheme has seen limited progress, with only about 3.7% of the allocated funds disbursed so far. The programme aims to help micro, small and medium enterprises adopt energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy systems, and cleaner production processes. However, slow approvals, limited awareness among businesses, and procedural challenges have delayed fund utilisation. Industry experts say faster implementation and better outreach are needed to encourage MSMEs to adopt sustainable practices. Strengthening the scheme could help reduce emissions, cut energy costs for small businesses, and support India’s broader climate and green manufacturing goals.

Manufacturing & Other Operations under Warehousing Regulation (MOOWR) Scheme: In-bound Electronics Manufacturing Facility

The ELCINA report on the Manufacturing & Other Operations under Warehousing Regulation (MOOWR) scheme offers electronics manufacturers detailed guidance on leveraging this customs duty deferment program. MOOWR, revamped in 2019 under the Customs Act Sections 58 and 65, enables duty-free import of raw materials and capital goods into bonded warehouses for processing, manufacturing, job work, or repacking, with deferred duties payable only upon domestic clearance – ideal for export-focused EMS firms in India to cut working capital costs and boost liquidity amid PLI and ECMS incentives. It emphasizes MOOWR's role in positioning India as a manufacturing hub, complementing Budget 2026's ₹40,000 crore outlay, while highlighting risks like inventory tracking and exit duties.
