Centre Ready For Air Taxi Policy Framework: Civil Aviation Secretary

At a recent event in Bangalore, Civil Aviation Secretary Rajiv Bansal suggested that the union ministry is ready to formulate a policy framework for air taxis and will soon commission a study on the matter. Notably, the government is planning to launch a Production Linked Incentives (PLI) scheme for drones soon. After that, the next frontier for the government will be the development of the e-VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) policy in the country. It must be noted that E-VTOL aircraft use electric power to hover, take off, and land vertically. As the electric propulsion system developed and the need for aerial vehicle technology for urban air mobility gained prominence, this technology came to the rescue to provide a greener alternative.

Japan, US Signs Trade Agreement on EV Battery Minerals To Reduce Dependence on China

The east Asian nation Japan and the US has signed an agreement on trade on electric vehicles battery minerals. The agreement is an imperative strategy to boost the EV battery supply chains and reduce dependence on China for more important resources. On the other hand, it will help Japanese automobile manufacturers to to have a larger access to the newly unleashed $7,500 U.S. EV tax credit. According to an unnamed official from the Biden government, the newly signed MoU bars both the countries from unleashing bilateral export ban or restrictions on the EV battery’s important minerals, which include lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite and manganese.

How South Korea Aims to Shatter China’s Dream of Leading Global Semiconductor Supply Chain

A Bloomberg report has now stated that South Korea is now speculated to spend billions on sophisticated chip-making equipment in the coming year in an effort to defeat China in the semiconductor battle. This is the same as the US banning the export of key semiconductor technology to China to develop the international semiconductor supply chains market. The report also added that the east Asian nation is likely to invest more in fab equipment by 41.5 percent to $21 billion in the coming year. The US based global semiconductor association SEMI noted that China has pushed only a 2 percent escalation to $16.6 billion. The data clearly shows that the country is facing various challenges to purchase important semiconductor equipment to develop its chipset. This is because the US export control has made it difficult for China to access or buy equipment from companies like ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands.

Premium Market Captures More Than Half of Global Smartphone Revenue in 2022 For First Time

Although overall global smartphone sales in 2022 fell 12% YoY due to macroeconomic difficulties, global premium (≥$600 wholesale price) smartphone sales climbed 1% YoY in contrast, which allowed the price segment to contribute to 55% of the total global smartphone market revenue for the first time ever. The premium segment, which has been consistently outperforming the global smartphone market, captured more than one-fifth of total global smartphone sales as well. There are several reasons for this growth. Despite the tough market conditions in 2022, affluent consumers were more immune to the macroeconomic difficulties than customers from the lower end. Consequently, sales in the premium market grew, while those in the entry and mid-tier segments declined.

RBI’s TReDS financed this many MSME invoices involving Rs 1.42 lakh crore till Feb 2023

The Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) launched by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for MSMEs to finance or discount their invoices has financed 54.56 lakh invoices till February 2023. The amount involved in invoices discounted stood at Rs 1.42 lakh crore, Bhagwat Karad, minister of state in the finance ministry informed Lok Sabha in a written reply to a question on Monday. In order to address the constraints faced by MSMEs in obtaining finance, particularly in terms of their ability to convert trade receivables into liquid funds, the central bank had issued guidelines for TReDS to permit the non-bank entities to set up and operate digital platforms for financing trade receivables through multiple financiers.

MSME ministry invites bids from CPSEs to procure machines, equipment for its technology centres

The Office of the Development Commissioner (DC) under the MSME ministry, which assists the latter in formulating, coordinating, implementing and monitoring different MSME policies, is looking to purchase various plant & machinery and equipment for its technology centres (TCs) under the Technology Centre Systems Programme (TCSP). In a request for proposal (RfP) last week, the DC office invited tenders from central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) — having experience in procurement and contract management for goods — for procurement of equipment under the World Bank-assisted TCSP. Apart from procurement of equipment, the programme also involves providing technical support to TCs, earlier known as Tool Rooms, working as autonomous bodies under the MSME ministry.

Govt looks to attract MSMEs to Indian internet domain .in with these incentives

The government is looking to incentives MSMEs to get their websites and emails registered with the Indian internet domain .in instead of larger and more popular domains such as .com and others. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is soon expected to offer .in domain free of cost for the first year and customized e-mail with 10GB storage space to MSMEs who get registered on a daily basis. However, MSMEs will have to pay a renewal fee of Rs 325 per year after the first year per domain to avail the .in domain and e-mail facilities. The ministry noted that the increasing use of the internet has led to a significant increase in websites and web-related services.

MSMEs not static, but growing in size, asserts Finance Ministry

The Finance Ministry has sought to dismiss the “narrative” that India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are stagnating, citing data that it asserts shows smaller firms evolving into larger units in recent years. However, industry representatives are not sure the numbers have been correctly interpreted by the Ministry.  In its recent monthly economic review for February, the ministry had said the number of micro units graduating to small units had increased to 65,140 in 2022-23, from 28,881 in 2021-22, “belying the narrative that MSME units suffer from the inertia of rest and are reluctant to be upwardly mobile”. Among the major States, Bihar, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha etc., have displayed encouraging results, scoring way above the country average.

How digital supply chains unlock immense possibilities for MSMEs

The growth engines of India’s economy are micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises MSMEs. The majority of these enterprises are traditional or unstructured and have limited access to credit and limited room to grow. There is an urgent need for MSMEs to adopt a digital-first approach as doing so will help them reap benefits immediately and prepare them for the uncertainties of the future. To ensure these small and conventional enterprises continue to drive the nation’s economy towards greater prosperity, digitization of the supply chain is of paramount importance. The Indian growth story is irrefutable; however, it faces headwinds including from a logistics sector which – when benchmarked against global standards – is grossly inefficient. This scenario is poised to change as the Indian Government is setting its sights on improving inefficient supply chain networks to bolster economic growth in India.
