Japan,
US Signs Trade Agreement on EV Battery Minerals To Reduce
Dependence on China
The east Asian nation Japan and the US has signed an
agreement on trade on electric vehicles battery minerals.
The agreement is an imperative strategy to boost the EV
battery supply chains and reduce dependence on China for
more important resources. On the other hand, it will help
Japanese automobile manufacturers to to have a larger access
to the newly unleashed $7,500 U.S. EV tax credit. According
to an unnamed official from the Biden government, the newly
signed MoU bars both the countries from unleashing bilateral
export ban or restrictions on the EV battery’s important
minerals, which include lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite
and manganese.

How South Korea Aims to Shatter
China’s Dream of Leading Global Semiconductor Supply Chain
A Bloomberg report has now stated that South Korea is now
speculated to spend billions on sophisticated chip-making
equipment in the coming year in an effort to defeat China in
the semiconductor battle. This is the same as the US banning
the export of key semiconductor technology to China to
develop the international semiconductor supply chains
market. The report also added that the east Asian nation is
likely to invest more in fab equipment by 41.5 percent to
$21 billion in the coming year. The US based global
semiconductor association SEMI noted that China has pushed
only a 2 percent escalation to $16.6 billion. The data
clearly shows that the country is facing various challenges
to purchase important semiconductor equipment to develop its
chipset. This is because the US export control has made it
difficult for China to access or buy equipment from
companies like ASML Holding NV of the Netherlands.

Why Lithium Price Will Decrease By
Two-folds in The Coming Months, Define Analysts
Chemical element Lithium, which is now dubbed ‘White Gold’
is commonly utilized in almost every electric car battery,
but interestingly, the price of this element has fallen
drastically thereby helping EVs to be more affordable.
According to Benchamak Minerals, by 20 percent the price of
lithium has fallen since January, which has augmented the
sales of electric cars globally. Cobalt, another element
which is widely used in making batteries has also fallen by
more than double, and Copper on the other hand, used in
batteries and electric motors has fallen by around 18
percent, but unfortunately, copper countries like Peru and
the US are still facing various challenges to escalate
production.

Huawei reportedly says it has

Huawei reportedly said it has developed its own chip design
tools, a move aimed at side-stepping U.S. sanctions and
making the Chinese technology giant more self-sufficient in
the semiconductor space. Eric Xu, rotating chairman at
Huawei, said the company along with other domestic firms,
jointly created electronic chip design tools required to
make semiconductors at 14 nanometers and above, according to
a speech obtained by Chinese financial and business
publication Yicai. Xu said those tools will be verified this
year, which would allow them to be put into use. Huawei was
not immediately available for comment when contacted by

consider softer warning for WinZO app downloads
The Delhi High Court asked Google LLC on Friday to inform by
April 26 its willingness to make changes by giving a milder
warning to users while downloading the WinZO application

justices Manmohan and Saurabh Banerjee told the Google

it is a case of malware? You can say it is unverified. Harm
may be a harsh word,” it said. The high court asked Google
whether it can say the application is harmful when it does
not know verified reports about it. “Can you say it is

your own risk,” the court said, while posting the matter for

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has reportedly
rejected a proposal by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of
India (TRAI) to reserve some bands of 5G airwaves for
captive private networks. According to DoT, if private
networks want to utilise spectrum in those bands, they
should obtain it by leading from telecom operators. In its
recommendations for 5G auctions, TRAI had proposed to
reserve at least 40 MHz in the 3700-3800 MHz band, or
mid-band, for private networks. It also suggested reserving
at least 40 MHz in 4800-4990 MHz and at least 400 MHz in
28.5-29.5 GHz, or the mmWave band, for private networks.
After receiving the recommendations, DoT had formed a
committee to study the feasibility of the establishment of
private networks in the spectrum bands proposed by TRAI.

US, Japan Reach Deal On Critical
Minerals For Electric Vehicle Batteries
The United States and Japan have reached an agreement on
trade in minerals that are key to electric vehicle
batteries, US trade officials said Tuesday, a move to
reinforce supply chains in a sector dominated by China. Rare
earth elements and minerals such as lithium are becoming
increasingly important in clean energy technologies, but the
United States is set to face gaps in such critical mineral
supplies when it comes to meeting expected demand for EVs.
The latest US-Japan deal includes commitments not to impose
export duties on critical minerals shipped to the other
country, said statement released by the US Trade

Apple Contribution to ‘Made in India’
Smartphone Shipments Reached 25% in Value Terms in 2022
‘Made in India’ smartphone shipments declined 3% YoY in 2022
(January-December) , according to the latest research from
Counterpoint’s Made in India service. The major factor
behind this decline was the softening of consumer demand due
to macroeconomic headwinds, especially in the second half of
the year. The shipments fell 19% YoY in the last quarter due
to local demand decline, particularly in the entry-tier and
mid-tier segments. However, in terms of value, ‘Made in
India’ smartphone shipments registered 34% YoY growth,
riding on the local trend of increasing premiumization
coupled with the increasing exports of premium smartphones,
especially from Apple. ‘Made in India’ shipments from Apple
grew 65% YoY by volume and 162% YoY by value, taking the
brand’s value share to 25% in 2022, up from 12% in 2021.

China’s smartwatch shipments fell 8.8% YoY in 2022, mainly

a quarterly YoY growth in shipments. The global smartwatch
shipments grew 9% YoY during the same period. Huawei and
Apple dominated the China smartwatch market in 2022, with
their combined share rising to almost 50%. Only OPPO (105%
YoY), Apple (4% YoY) and Huawei (9% YoY) grew YoY among key
brands. The biggest standout feature of the year was the
high-to-premium segments’ (>$200) share rise. Shipments in
the $301-$400 segment grew 31% YoY, while shipments in the
≥$401 segment grew a whopping 1138% YoY. The ≤$50 segment’s
share dropped to 22%, with a 28% YoY decrease in shipments

Premium Market Captures More Than Half
of Global Smartphone Revenue in 2022 For First Time
Although overall global smartphone sales in 2022 fell 12%
YoY due to macroeconomic difficulties, global premium (≥$600
wholesale price) smartphone sales climbed 1% YoY in
contrast, which allowed the price segment to contribute to
55% of the total global smartphone market revenue for the
first time ever. The premium segment, which has been
consistently outperforming the global smartphone market,
captured more than one-fifth of total global smartphone
sales as well. There are several reasons for this growth.
Despite the tough market conditions in 2022, affluent
consumers were more immune to the macroeconomic difficulties
than customers from the lower end. Consequently, sales in
the premium market grew, while those in the entry and
mid-tier segments declined.

MSME loan delinquencies dip to 3% by

How digital supply chains unlock
immense possibilities for MSMEs
The growth engines of India’s economy are micro, small, and
medium-sized enterprises MSMEs. The majority of these
enterprises are traditional or unstructured and have limited
access to credit and limited room to grow. There is an
urgent need for MSMEs to adopt a digital-first approach as
doing so will help them reap benefits immediately and
prepare them for the uncertainties of the future. To ensure
these small and conventional enterprises continue to drive
the nation’s economy towards greater prosperity,
digitization of the supply chain is of paramount importance.
The Indian growth story is irrefutable; however, it faces
headwinds including from a logistics sector which – when
