Comply With Rules: Government to VPN Service Providers

Virtual Private Network or VPN service providers that are not ready to comply with the new guidelines have the only option to exit from India, minister of state for electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday. The minister, while releasing FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) on the recent directive on reporting of cyber breach incidents, said that every well-meaning company or entity understands that a safe and trusted internet is going to help it. "There is no opportunity for somebody to say we will not follow the rules and laws of India. If you don't have the logs, start maintaining the logs. If you are a VPN that wants to hide and be anonymous about those who use its VPN and you don't want to go by these rules, if you want to pull out, then frankly you have no other opportunity but to pull out," he said. The ministry of electronics and IT has mandated cloud service providers, VPN (Virtual Private Network) firms, data centre companies and virtual private server providers to store users' data for at least five years. Some of the VPN companies have claimed that the new rule may lead to cyber security loopholes in the system - an argument which was rejected by the minister. Mr Chandrasekhar said that the government is also not going to make any change in the rules on mandating entities to report cyber breach in their system within six hours of learning about it.

Trade bodies want WTO to extend zero customs duty on electronic transmissions

More than 85 global organizations, including some from India, on Tuesday wrote to the World Trade Organization (WTO) members to extend the zero per cent customs duty regime on electronic transmissions. Though there is no concrete definition of what comprises electronic transmission, WTO members have generally agreed that anything from software to email, digital text messages, music videos, songs, and video games fall under the ambit of this term. “Continuation of the Moratorium is critical to the Covid-19 recovery. As detailed by the United Nations, the World Bank, the OECD, and many other organizations, the cross-border exchange of knowledge, technical know-how, and scientific and commercial information across transnational IT networks, as well as access to digital tools and global market opportunities have helped sustain economies, expand education, and raise global living standards,” the letter read.

Semiconductors: How India can take a cue from Israel to build a vibrant chip ecosystem

The semiconductor industry in Israel has been a bedrock of innovation, growth and investments for decades, building up a strong ecosystem of companies within the country. Proof of this came earlier this year when US chip giant Intel announced plans to buy Israeli chipmaker Tower Semiconductor for $5.4 billion. “There is something more that exists in creating fabless production. Affirming what Subramaniam said, Pradeep Vajram, Executive Chairman at AlphaICs Corporation, a fabless semiconductor company, said a local market might not necessarily help. Speaking more on the challenges for the industry, he said investment was a critical component for the semiconductor space. “It's a long-drawn process and very patient capital is required.

Our 35-year-old journey through the history of Indian Electronics: TVS Electronics

This decade saw the birth of TVS Electronics as a company that would not just go on to become a leader in its segment, but one that would change the game for the Indian industry. Till the 1970s India was still far behind in the technology game. Telephones and telegraph were the main modes of communication and were primarily owned by the Government. The 80s brought with it a new wave of technology with several advancements in electronic engineering. And luckily, India had begun to ride that wave as soon as it had begun. I remember at the time that with the easing of several norms including foreign investment, 100% foreign equity, reducing customs duties and so on, expansion took place, especially in the computer and consumer electronics sectors. Clearly, it was a time when knowledge was not freely available, and expertise lay in the hands of a chosen few.

Computer classes lined up for heads of 3,000 gram panchayats

The Bengal government will provide digital literacy training to chiefs and deputy chiefs of over 3,000 gram panchayats across the state to make them gadget-savvy enough to check digitised and online proposals of welfare schemes before putting their digital signature for the same. Sources said the move had been taken to reduce “malpractices” at rural bodies before the panchayat polls next year.   The training will be rolled out in Bankura on Monday and will cover all districts by June. “We have found that most chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural bodies across the state became dependent on panchayat staff like secretaries and computer assistants. As they sign welfare schemes, they should know how to check the proposals before putting their signatures. It will be of great help to be self-reliant,” state panchayat and rural development minister Pulak Roy said. There are 3,339 gram panchayats in Bengal and by June 30, all chiefs and deputy chiefs of rural bodies will be trained. Officials said the department had a plan to revisit the trainees after a few months to check how the training helped them.

Looking beyond China, Apple plans ramping up production in India, Southeast Asia: Report

Battered by Beijing's strict anti-COVID measures, Apple Inc has told some of its contract manufacturers that it wants to increase the production outside China, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. India and Vietnam, which are already sites of Apple production, are among the countries being seen as an alternative option to China, the report added. This move by Apple, being the largest US company by market capitalization, will influence the thinking of other Western companies which have been considering to reduce their dependency on China for manufacturing or key materials in the wake of Beijing's indirect support to Russia for its invasion in Ukraine and lockdowns in some cities to fight COVID-19.  The power outages last year also dented China's reputation for reliability. Except India, China was the one which have the pool of qualified workers that exceeds the entire population of many alternative countries in Asia. Apple sees India as the closest thing to the next China, as both of them are similar in population and both offers low cost, Wall Street Journal reported.

It says that amid the global chip crunch, chip capacity to remain very tight this year. This has kept order books full and allowed chipmakers to charge premium prices In the late April earnings call, Samsung said that the available capacity was less that the demand for its chip contract manufacturing by major customers. India's heat wave to lift AC sales to record but supplies from China delayed

Indian air conditioner manufacturers are expecting record sales this year as a heatwave scorch most of the country, an industry body told Reuters, but delayed arrivals of components from COVID-hit China may cause shortages of premium products. With temperatures this month breaching 49 degrees Celsius in New Delhi, sales are set to reach 8.5-9 million units this year, up from 2019's previous record of 6.5 million, the head of the Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) said. "The market has been extremely good because this year, we got the heat in the second half of March rather than April," CEAMA President Eric Braganza, formerly the India head of China's Haier Appliances, said on Tuesday. Power demand has also hit a record high as India registered its hottest March in more than a century and an unusually hot April.  Braganza, whose association members include Voltas Ltd, Whirlpool of India Ltd and Havells India Ltd, said deliveries of parts from China are now taking 60-90 days, up from 45 days normally.

SEMI President & CEO Mr Ajit Manocha and ELCINA Leaders agree to collaborate

In the backdrop of Semicon India 2022 being organised in Bengaluru from 29th April by Ministry of Electronics & IT and the recently announced Scheme for Promotion of Semiconductor Eco-System in India with a massive outlay of Rs 76,000 Crores, SEMI President & CEO Mr Ajit Manocha met ELCINA Leaders in New Delhi to explore collaboration opportunities for promoting the Semiconductor and electronics industry. The vision of the industry leaders is to catalyse the industry in India and support investors by ensuring that the benefits of the Semiconductor and other schemes under National Policy on Electronics are delivered to them and targets achieved.

SEMI, headquartered in Milpitas, California, USA, is the leading global industry association comprising companies involved in the semiconductor, electronics design and manufacturing supply chain connecting a vast global community from electronics domain serving more than 2,500 member companies and 1.3 million professionals worldwide.

SEMI is headed by Mr Ajit Manocha, a distinguished industry leader with over 40 years of global experience in the semiconductor industry. Formerly he was CEO at GlobalFoundries. He has had an esteemed career shouldering top responsibilities at Spansion, Philips/NXP Semiconductors following his early career success at AT&T Bell Laboratories where, as a research scientist, he was granted several patents related to microelectronics manufacturing. Mr Manocha is active on global advocacy issues, championing electronics advances to improve global innovation, health, safety, talent, and education. In 2020, the Silicon Valley Engineering Council inducted him to be in the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame.

The two associations agreed to foster collaboration and identify potential opportunities in upcoming semiconductor and microelectronics sector in the country and work to realise the potential.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Sanjay Agarwal, President ELCINA expressed great enthusiasm on the prospects of SEMI and ELCINA working together. He said “ELCINA is dedicated to serving electronics manufacturing across verticals and supporting Semiconductor manufacturing is a matter of pride for us. Some of our long-term members are manufacturing Discrete semiconductors and devices and our collaboration with SEMI will strengthen our efforts and enable growth of this high-tech segment. Our strengths are complementary, and this will have very encouraging results in the times to come. ELCINA can provide an interactive and vibrant platform in India to global companies represented by SEMI and hand holding them to successfully establish operations in India and avail benefits of the schemes formulated by the Central and State Governments of India. We are dedicated to work to provide a seamless and positive experience in India”.

Mr Ajit Manocha too expressed happiness at the prospect of SEMI working with ELCINA and welcomed the strategic objective of Government of India and the industry to become a hub for electronics and semiconductor innovations serving the requirement of the world. “The partnership with ELCINA will be beneficial for the entire industry,” Mr Manocha said. “Some tough lessons had been learned from the geo-political issues over the last 2-3 years which had shaken up the confidence of global companies”. However, he stated that “India had not taken advantage of the opportunities which had emerged while smaller economies such as Vietnam and Philippines had been able to gain more. The new Semiconductor Policy announced by Ministry of Electronics & IT is well thought out and much better geared to catalyse the growth of the semiconductor industry in India. We are very happy to collaborate with ELCINA to connect the industry in India with the global semiconductor community for mutual benefit. We will work towards the common objectives of supporting the global electronics industry and strengthen the efforts for research and development for sustainability, green electronics, societal gains and skill development”.

Dr Ashwini Agarwal, Director, Applied Materials spoke on the India Semiconductor Opportunity -Challenge and Change, and highlighted the “huge potential for ELCINA to work together to promote the semiconductor industry in line with ‘Make in India’ opportunity. There was need for strong focus on B2B engagement and collaborations for investment and market promotion” Dr Agarwal said. Mr Amrit Manwani, Chairman Sahasra Group which is establishing the first Semiconductor facility for packaging memory devices was equally optimistic about the SEMI – ELCINA collaboration and fiture of semiconductor manufacturing in India. “Being a part of ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat” initiative the ‘India Semiconductor Mission’ (ISM) is bound to be a great success and we at ELCINA would be happy to be a part of this nation building exercise”.

Key ELCINA members and Past Presidents who participated included Mr Vinod Sharma, MD, Deki Electronics Ltd., Mr Sanjive Narayan, Director, Syrma-SGS and Mr Pankaj Gulati, COO, CDIL. They were keenly looking forward to this close association with SEMI as there was great synergy between the two associations with potential to work together for benefit of their respective members. Notable participating organisations in the meeting included Infineon, Corning, Tata Electronics, Seoul Semiconductors and NCFlexe, IIT Kanpur. Speaking on behalf of ELCINA Members, Rajoo Goel, Secretary General, said that the all-encompassing role of SEMI covering wide scope of the electronics industry is highly synergistic with ELCINA for future engagements to bring new opportunities for Indian industry and enable them to move into the higher technology space.

ELCINA EMS Task Force Report:

(recently Launched by Mr. Ajay Sawhney, Secretary, Min. of Electronics & IT)

ELCINA constituted a Task Force to study the EMS Sector and come up with a Research Report providing details of the status and prospects of this ESDM segment. The task force had representation from MeitY & Invest India. The EMS Task Force commenced deliberations in July 2020 and concluded the same in November, coming up with valuable details such as the sector’s current size, growth potential, exports and policies which impact its progress.

The Task Force findings are compiled in the form of a report. As per report, globally EMS sector was valued at US$ 832 Bn in 2019 and estimated to grow to US$ 1055 Bn by 2025. ELCINA predicts that the Indian EMS industry will gallop from US$ 23.5 Bn in 2019-20 to US$ 152 Bn by 2025. This effectively means that it has the potential to grow from <3% of the global industry to about 14% within 5 years.

“Indian Printed Circuit Board Industry & Market Research Report

The evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of the device.

  • By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104 billion in 2015

  • Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still dependent on imports.

  • Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare board PCBs and the populated PCBs)

  • Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30% of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.
