Electronics buyers find
more value in security features as threats rise
Ahead of the festive season, India’s notoriously
value conscious consumers would now prioritise
security and privacy to resolution and memory on
their electronic devices like smartphones and

shift in customer behaviour. The steep rise in
incidents of cyber-attacks, malware and hacking
has led to an increase in demand for smartphones
and laptops with enhanced in-built privacy
measures and anti-virus software. Companies are
now leveraging the demand by launching more such
devices or including these for marketing pushes,
industry executives said. "We have launched the

the effects of cyber threats while safeguarding

Why India’s e-waste system
needs change
According to the Global e-waste monitor 2020,
53.6 million tonnes (Mt) of electronic waste was
generated globally in 2019, of which Asia was
the largest contributor. The report found China
to be the world’s top e-waste producer having
generated 10.1 Mt of e-waste in 2019. The rising
e-waste hills are no alien to the Indian
sub-continent either. Not surprisingly, India is
the third biggest contributor with 3.2 million
tonnes. The monitor also highlights that albeit
the high generation numbers, China seems to be
faring much better than Indian terms of
collection and recycling of e-waste. With the
accelerating global expansion of the electric
vehicles sector, the question of recycling
e-waste batteries will soon assume gargantuan
proportions in the waste management systems of
different countries, including India and China.

At 17% in July, GST e-way

E-way bill generation for goods transportation
under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system
has come in at 6.42 crore in July, highest in
four months and 17% higher than June, indicating
a sustained pick-up in economic recovery.
Average daily e-way bill generation was 24.3
lakh in the last six days of July, compared with
20.2 lakh in the week ended July, 25, 20.4 lakh
in preceding week and 19.24 lakh in the first 11
days of July. Thanks to easing of the
Covid-induced lockdowns, e-way bill generation
by businesses rose to 5.5 crore in June from 4
crore in May. About 5.9 crore e-way bills were
generated in April. Higher e-way bill generation
will also reflect in GST revenue. GST
collections came in at an impressive `1.16 lakh
crore in July (largely June transactions), up a
third on year and a quarter on month, reflecting
a smart economic recovery after the second
Covid-19 wave. That in July, the average daily
e-way bill generation was higher than in
May-June indicates the August collections (from
July sales) could be even higher. Other high
frequency data also indicate a rebound in
economic activities.

Students develop new 'driverless' electric car

A group of engineering students of a city-based
private university have developed a "driverless
autonomous" electric four-wheeler using
Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the intention
of reducing accidents and deaths caused by human
errors. This vehicle has been developed by the
students of mechanical engineering and
electronics and telecommunications branches of
the MIT World Peace University. "The car is
based on level-III autonomy and uses BLDC motor.
A lithium iron phosphate battery has been used
to power the vehicle," Yash Keskar, one of the
students, said. Another student, Sudhanshu
Manerikar, said that the steering, throttle and
brakes of the vehicle are controlled using a
number of AI and ML algorithms, involving leader
cameras, microprocessors, automated action
control systems and various sensors. This
vehicle has the power of three kilowatts and
takes four hours to charge. It can cover a
distance of 40 kms. Such vehicles have numerous
applications in agriculture, mining,
transportation, and other fields, he added.
Professor Dr Ganesh Kakandikar said that such
electric vehicles can be used to connect metro
stations to the adjoining areas, for
transportation, at airports, in golf clubs, in
universities, etc.

RedmiBook is good but Mi

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi entered an all-new
category on Tuesday with the launch of Redmi
RedmiBook Pro and RedmiBook e-Learning Edition

last year but came from its premium Mi sub-brand
while the new machines are the first from the
house of Redmi. Those who have followed Xiaomi
would know that it targets more budget conscious
users with the Redmi sub-brand and the new
RedmiBook series is an example of the same. Both
new laptops come with 11th-generation Intel Core
processors and have up to 512GB SSD storage.
They are designed keeping in mind early stage
working professionals and students learning
remotely. So obviously, they have been priced
accordingly as well. The Redmi Book Pro costs Rs
49,999 in India while the RedmiBook e-learning
edition price starts at Rs 41,999. In
isolation, this is an excellent pricing for the
features you get on the RedmiBook series.
However, a closer look at the details show that
Xiaomi has made a few compromises and of course,
the new laptops are not as premium as last
year’s Mi NoteBook 14.

ELCINA EMS Task
Force Report:
(recently Launched by Mr. Ajay Sawhney, Secretary,
Min. of Electronics & IT)
ELCINA
constituted a Task Force to study the EMS Sector and
come up with a Research Report providing details of
the status and prospects of this ESDM segment. The
task force had representation from MeitY & Invest
India. The EMS Task Force commenced deliberations in
July 2020 and concluded the same in November, coming
up with valuable details such as the sector’s
current size, growth potential, exports and policies
which impact its progress.
The Task Force findings are compiled in the form of
a report. As per report, globally EMS sector was
valued at US$ 832 Bn in 2019 and estimated to grow
to US$ 1055 Bn by 2025. ELCINA predicts that the
Indian EMS industry will gallop from US$ 23.5 Bn in
2019-20 to US$ 152 Bn by 2025. This effectively
means that it has the potential to grow from <3% of
the global industry to about 14% within 5 years.

“Indian Printed Circuit
Board Industry & Market Research Report
The
evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the
design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new
technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the
printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the
backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required
mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the
circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also
help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of
the device.
-
By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase
with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104
billion in 2015
-
Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by
local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still
dependent on imports.
-
Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge
demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents
the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare
board PCBs and the populated PCBs)
-
Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30%
of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB
manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.

Super
Capacitor-Market Landscape Study

A Supercapacitor or Ultracapacitor is a charge storage device
that stores electrical charges via electrochemical &
electrostatic processes and has an unusually high energy density
when compared to common capacitors. Due to their beneficial
properties like fast charging ability,
superior low temperature performance, long service and cycle
life, and reliability, Supercapacitors hold the potential to
replace or complement traditional batteries and capacitors in
several applications. Supercapacitors are already being used
world wide in number of applications ranging from automotive,
renewable energy to electronics. For more details you can visit
