Airtel to switch to Standalone 5G in few years, won’t buy 700 MHz

Bharti Airtel will move to the standalone (SA) mode of 5G in a couple of years as demand evolves, but still won’t need the 700 MHz band and will not buy it even in the next sale, a senior company executive said. As per the executive, Airtel has enough mid-band spectrum and it will be reframed to roll out SA mode 5G when the requirement arises. “We have the capability to roll out SA mode even now but there is no requirement as not enough uptake has taken place so far. Even the existing capacity will not be utilised fully. But we ultimately plan to shift to SA mode as the demand increases,” said the executive, who didn’t want to be named. Asked about his views on 700 MHz spectrum and whether Airtel will buy the band in future auctions, he said the company does not intend to buy the band in future also for rolling out SA mode and rather utilise its spectrum in 850 MHz and 900 Mhz bands, which offer the same characteristics.

BSNL, TCS price stalemate to end soon: DoT official:

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are likely to ink a deal at a “negotiated price” by next month to supply gear for the telco’s commercial rollout of fourth generation or 4G services. “99% things are sorted, and BSNL is expected to formally enter into an agreement with TCS within the next 30 to 45 days to supply 4G equipment,” a senior telecom department (DoT) official told ET Telecom. Currently, there is a price disparity of Rs 5,292-crore as the TCS-backed consortium quoted Rs 21, 428-crore as a capital expense (capex) including 5G core expansion, as against the BSNL’s estimation of Rs 16,136-crore. Earlier this year, TCS approached BSNL and sought a revised price for network equipment deployment on the back of increased component cost due to supply chain constraints, escalated labor wages, and continued rupee volatility against the US dollar.

HFCL, Qualcomm partner to develop 5G small cells

In continuation of its 5G strategy, homegrown telecom gear maker HFCL said that the company has inked a partnership with US-based chipmaker Qualcomm for the design and development of HFCL 5G ‘Outdoor Small Cell’ products that support both standalone (SA) and no standalone (NSA) modes. This follows a mm Wave 5G product design and development pact signed between the two companies in August. Small cells will play a critical role in 5G networks due to higher spectrum bands, which necessitate denser network deployments to support larger traffic volumes. Small cell deployments help to enhance coverage in places where existing macro cells have coverage holes or blackspots, or where coverage does not exist. In addition, small cells provide capacity enhancements by offloading traffic from macro cells in densely occupied locations.

DoT summons mobile device makers, telecom companies to push 5G updates

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has summoned mobile device makers and telecom companies on Wednesday, following complaints from the latter that phone-manufacturing companies have not released their updated software patches, over the air that allow users of 5G-enabled phones access the recently rolled-out service. According to telecom companies, customers with 5G phones are not getting the service on their phones, even though they have 5G is available in select cities, such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Varanasi. Smartphone makers, on the other hand, have hit back at telcos, saying though they announced the launch of 5G in the week of Dusshera, there are only a handful of 5G towers. According to device makers, telcos are unfairly blaming them for the problem; one telco in Delhi, they say, has only a few 5G towers with very limited coverage.

India wants UK trade pact to boost services

The government is unlikely to agree to major tariff concessions, including on Scotch and automobiles, without getting a matching deal on services under the proposed bilateral trade agreement with the UK. Given that tariffs are low in the UK, the only major concession that India can hope to get on the services front is easier access and a liberal visa regime for its students and professionals, something it managed to get with Australia under the interim trade deal or Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement. “FTAs to be entered into after thorough consultation with all stakeholders, including industry, and the government will not diverge from this approach for the sake of deadlines,” the minister was quoted as saying in an official statement.

Google's new Pixel Watch faces hurdles with economy, no iPhone support

Google's debut smartwatch will go on sale Oct. 13 for $350, the Alphabet Inc unit said on Thursday, taking on a field dominated by Apple Watch at a time when inflation-hammered consumers are shunning all forms of pricey wearables. At $100 more than Apple Inc's lowest-cost model and limited to people with Android phones, the Google Pixel Watch faces enormous obstacles to adoption, market analysts say. Even sales of the Apple Watch have slipped this year as consumers delay purchases or select cheaper rivals. "The market is not as robust as it once was," said Jitesh Ubrani, a research manager at market intelligence firm IDC, adding that aggressive discounting will be crucial to Google. Google apps already work with watches from companies including Apple, Samsung Electronics Co and Fitbit, which Google bought last year and whose devices are known for tracking personal health. The new round-faced Pixel Watch, made from stainless steel and glass with dozens of wristband options, enables contactless payments, music control and turn-by-turn directions. A model with cellular connectivity costs $50 more. The watches will be sold in the United States and several other countries.

Samsung Electronics posts first quarterly earnings drop in nearly 3 years on demand slump

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd flagged a worse-than-expected 32% drop in quarterly operating earnings on Friday, as demand for electronic devices and the memory chips that power them shrank due to an economic downturn. The world's largest memory-chip and smartphone maker estimated its profit fell to 10.8 trillion won ($7.67 billion) in July-September - its first year-on-year decline in nearly three years - from 15.8 trillion won a year earlier. The profit was 8.5% below an 11.8 trillion won Smart Estimate from Refinitiv.  Revenue likely rose 3% from the same period a year earlier to 76 trillion won, Samsung said in a short preliminary earnings release. Samsung is due to release detailed earnings on October 27. Samsung's chip profits suffered from plunging memory chip prices due to weakening demand for consumer electronics, hurt by rising inflation, higher interest rates and the impact of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, analysts said. This has led memory chip buyers such as smartphone and PC makers to reduce purchases and use up existing inventory, driving down shipments and ushering in an industry downcycle

AMD revenue warning signals deep chip slump; shares dive 4%;

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc on Thursday provided third-quarter revenue estimates that were about a billion dollars less than previously forecast, signaling the chip slump could be much worse than expected. AMD shares dropped 4% in afterhours trading, dragging down shares of Nvidia Corp and Intel Corp by over 2%. "The PC market weakened significantly in the quarter," Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su said in a statement, adding that macroeconomic conditions drove PC demand lower than expected.  Runaway inflation and the reopening of offices and schools have led people to spend less on PCs than they did during lockdowns when many bought computers for work and school as they stayed home during the pandemic. Chipmakers are also under pressure from COVID curbs in key PC market China, while the Ukraine war has worsened supply-chain snarls and dragged demand further. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which tracks prices of major silicon-producing and allied businesses, has fallen 36.4% this year so far, compared to a 41.2% rise in 2021. "I think AMD is showing that nobody is safe from the post-pandemic PC downturn, and those inventory corrections are also impacting the company," said Anshel Sag, chip analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. "Overall, this looks to be more of a cyclical correction within a single, albeit large, business unit rather than a structural or strategic one."

Land incentives can be growth propellant for toy sector, says TN industry body

The Toy industry in Tamil Nadu alone is valued at Rs 600 crore and it can further grow if the government provides land at subsidised rates for both manufacturing and warehousing, said Santosh Kumar, President of Tamil Nadu Toy Dealers Association. Kumar noted that state’s toy industry has the potential to generate nearly 30,000 jobs if it received the required support, which would provide a thrust to the sector.  “With a minimal number of toy manufacturers in the state, Chennai and Tuticorin can be ideal destinations for the industry with port connectivity,” he said. Speaking about the industry at the national level, Kumar said that Chennai is somehow a very strong market with its logistics support. But, sadly we do not have the support which every other government provides.  Centre’s efforts to assist the industry through 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' campaign, has helped reduce the import of toys which earlier stood at 90 per cent of products

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal exhorts SMEs to consider dual listing

To increase capital raising options small businesses must think about dual listing one on BSE’s SME platform and also on Gift City in Gandhinagar, said Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday. He was speaking at an event to acknowledge the 400th listing on the BSE’s SME platform, reported Financial Express. “Possibly you can look at the International Financial Services Centre at the Gift City. We also need to see whether we can encourage some of these companies to explore getting listed through the Gift City platform or a dual listing between Mumbai and the Gift City,” he said. The Minister said that dual listing will help tap into domestic capital and also the international funds.   He urged BSE to try and get foreign institutional investors and sovereign wealth funds participate in this exchange. Emphasising on SME platform’s potential, the Minister said we need to get more domestic investors in and also sensitise international investors. About 150 small companies which were first listed on the SME platform have moved to trade on the main platform now

CPCB proposes subsidy for pellet manufacturers to promote green fuel

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) is planning to provide subsidy to biomass pellets manufacturers to encourage sustainable fuel. To promote pellet manufacturing the board has planned a fund of Rs 50 crore to be provided as subsidy to manufacturers in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.   Initially the Power Ministry had suggested the use of 5 per cent to 10 per cent biomass as co-firing in coal-fired thermal power plants. But due to the scarcity of pellet manufacturers and power plants not preferring the use of biomass as fuel because of short supply there was not much progress.  This strategy aims to resolve the problem of crop residue burning, especially after paddy harvesting at the beginning of winter, when air quality deteriorates in the NCR.  Hence to ease pollution the government wants to promote the use of green fuel.

“Indian Printed Circuit Board Industry & Market Research Report

The evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of the device.

  • By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104 billion in 2015

  • Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still dependent on imports.

  • Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare board PCBs and the populated PCBs)

  • Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30% of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.
