5G Auction: Government receives record Rs 1.45 lakh crore worth of bids

The government has received record bids of Rs 1.45 lakh crore after four rounds on Day 1 of India's first-ever 5G spectrum auction. The crucial, albeit pricey, 700 MHz band saw bidding for the first time, along with strong interest in the mid-band (3.3-3.67 GHz) and high-band (26 GHz) airwaves. All bids were at base price. New entrant Adani Data Networks, a unit of the diversified Adani Group, is expected to have put in bids only for the high band, also known as the millimetre wave (mmWave), for use in its captive networks. There were bids for two slots of 700 MHz band pan-India, according to the telecom department's report for the first day of sale. Jio, which put in the highest pre-auction deposit, may have bid for both the slots of 5 MHz each, said an industry executive.

SK Hynix sees memory chip demand slowing in H2, including server chips

South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc said it expects memory chip demand to slow in the second half of the year, after booking its biggest second-quarter profit since 2018. "Shipments of PCs and smartphones that contain memory (chips) are expected to become lower than initially predicted," SK Hynix said in a statement.  Demand for server memory supplied to data center customers is also likely to slow as customers will consume their inventories." Rising inflation, concerns about a downturn in major markets, and repeated COVID-19 lockdowns in China have resulted in slowing smartphone sales. SK Hynix's bigger rival Samsung Electronics earlier this month reported a strong preliminary second-quarter profit, likely on server chip demand. The world's second-biggest memory chipmaker said on Wednesday its operating profit rose 56% to 4.2 trillion won ($3.2 billion) in the April-June quarter, versus 2.7 trillion won a year earlier, helped by robust demand from server clients and a strong dollar that offset higher material costs.

DoT OKs interim allotment of E band spectrum to telcos for backhaul

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will provisionally allot E-band airwaves exclusively to mobile operators via the administrative route in circles where they will hold 5G spectrum for meeting the latter backhaul needs. The telcos - who will need to pay a spectrum usage charge on these airwaves - will need to take part in an auction or any other method of allocation that the DoT decides later. Carriers will also need to pay the difference when the final price for such airwaves is decided by the government, though without interest. "For each E band carrier of 250 MHz paired bandwidth, spectrum charges will be charged at 0.15% of AGR (adjusted gross revenue) of TSPs in the interim period, which will be adjusted/recalculated retrospectively (from date of provisional assignment) based on the pricing decided finally," DoT said in an official notification.   The DoT, though, said no interest would be paid/charged for excess/shortfall sum, while making such adjustments/recalculation. Final assignment of carriers would be decided accordingly, it said. "All E-band carriers assigned, as an interim measure, would be purely on temporary and provisional basis and all such assignees will have to participate in the auction and/or any other assignment methodology, as decided by the government after considering the recommendations of the TRAI in this regard," the DoT notification added.

Japan gives Kioxia and Western Digital $680 million to boost memory chip production

Japan's government on Tuesday said it will provide as much as 92.9 billion yen ($680 million) to Kioxia Holdings and Western Digital Corp to help them boost production and ensure a stable supply of memory chips in Japan. The subsidy is part of a broader effort to revive chip production in Japan, as tensions between China and the United States and COVID-19 pandemic disruptions spur concern that Japanese companies such as automaker Toyota Motor Corp could be hobbled by semiconductor shortages. "We believe the investment will help stabilize advanced memory chip production in Japan," economy and trade minister Koichi Hagiuda said at a press briefing. "It will contribute to Japan U.S. cooperation's in semiconductors.  The financial assistance comes ahead of a planned trip to the United States this week by Hagiuda and Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi for their first ever two-plus-two talks with U.S. counterparts on broadening security cooperation to industrial and economic policy. Kioxia, which was spun off from Toshiba Corp, and Western Digital operate a joint flash memory chip plant in Yokkaichi in central Japan. Japan's government is also investing in a semiconductor plant being built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co in Western Japan along with Sony Corp and autopart maker Denso Corp.

Eye on private firms, govt may define 'ownership' of non-personal data

THE GOVERNMENT could look at clearly defining "ownership" of non-personal data held by big-tech platforms, such as Google, Meta and Amazon, if they refuse to share such data with a regulator as proposed in the draft National Data Governance Framework, The Indian Express has learnt. The draft framework, announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) in May, looks at acquiring non-personal data from the Government and persuading private companies to share this data for the benefit of start-ups in the country. Asked how the Government will ensure that private companies share non-personal data, given that the provision is non-binding, a senior official said: "Once we have a functional IDMO, the Government will share all the non-personal data in its possession with it.

A US Recession Will Also Come to India's Tech Hub

India's tech industry is ruling out a US recession. Or so you would think from Infosys Ltd.'s cheery forecast of 14% to 16% annual revenue growth, slightly better than what the country's second-biggest exporter of software services was projecting just three months ago. The Bengaluru-based firm, which reported its June quarter earnings on Sunday, is considered the industry's weathervane. If it's optimistic about orders, then there's reason to believe that the deal pipeline isn't drying up. US and European firms  from banking, manufacturing and retail to health care and utilities  are still entering offshoring contracts, particularly those that will help them automate processes to cut costs.  Evidence of heightened activity is also visible in last quarter's 12% year-on-year jump in Bengaluru office rents  three times as steep as Shanghai, Singapore or Sydney, according to Knight Frank. In the world's code-writing capital, information technology drives more than two-fifths of office-space leasing. If the tenants are paying more for space, they must be upbeat about the future.

The second wave of India's crackdown on Chinese tech is here

After Chinese smartphone apps, India is now cracking a whip on phone makers from its on-and-off rival and neighbor. In the last few months, at least three major Chinese smartphone makers have faced investigations from India's Enforcement Directorate (ED), the agency responsible for enforcing economic laws. In April, the ED seized over $695 million from Xiaomi Technology India Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Beijing-based Xiaomi group. Earlier this month, the ED seized 119 bank accounts holding over $58 million of Vivo India, which is owned by China's BBK Electronics. A few days later, the ED accused Vivo's sister firm, Oppo, of $551 million in tax evasion. Following repeated harassment by the financial crime-fighting authorities, the long-time India head of Xiaomi, Manu Kumar Jain, relocated to Dubai. The company has also accused authorities of physical violence and coercion during questioning. Vivo India's two Chinese executives have also reportedly fled India on-road to China via Nepal, as the probe intensified.

We are well placed to let fintech lead the success of Digital India

From a 6.6% contraction in 2020-21, the Indian economy recorded a sharp rebound of 8.7% growth in 2021-22, by provisional estimates. The International Monetary Fund's World Economic Outlook suggests that India shall become a $5 trillion economy by 2026-27. This growth is attributed in large part to the exponential growth expected in digital infrastructure for services, especially financial.  The rise in digital adoption during the pandemic has made India a trailblazer of the fintech revolution for developing as well as developed nations. The Niti Aayog report, India's Booming Gig and Platform Economy, has underscored the role of fintech and a regulatory sandbox regime in helping India achieve its $5 trillion target. The same was previously highlighted by the 2019 annual report of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. It mentions that India has a potential to create over $1 trillion in economic value from the digital economy, including services.

Bharat Electronics to gain from indigenisation; easing of chip shortage key

Bharat Electronics Ltd is a key beneficiary of the indigenisation drive in the defence sector. In the June quarter (Q1FY23) earnings call held on Thursday, the company said it has been asked to submit a roadmap for indigenising the components it imports from Russia and Ukraine. Further, the company is in discussions to take up annual maintenance contracts of Russian platforms, which are heavy on electronics. "We believe focus on defence indigenisation will only accelerate with the Russia-Ukraine crisis especially given Russia has accounted for 40%+ of India's defence imports," said analysts at Jefferies India in a report on 21 July. With respect to the non-defence business, it aims to increase the mix to 15% of sales in FY23 from 12% in FY22. The company sees Rs10000-12000 crore opportunity size from rail and metro sector where systems are currently being imported. Such diversification would aid in reducing dependence on the government, which is the sole buyer of defence equipment.

Novel method to turn existing solar parks into agrivoltaic facilities

An international research team has developed a new approach to improve land use at ground-mounted solar plants, which they claim could be used to add important wildlife habitats or even agricultural activity to land already in use by a conventional PV system. "We initially developed our approach for existing solar plants installed in the region of Apulia in southern Italy, but it could be utilized in other regions or countries with different vegetation," Teodoro Semeraro, an environmental scientist at Italy's University of Salento who led the research, told PV Magazine. "It could also be used for new projects that include agricultural use or rooftop installations combining green roofs with solar power generation, where the agricultural aspect would have less importance." The approach would see new vegetated land cover cultivated below and around solar installations, as potential habitat for pollinating insects or for agricultural activities including beekeeping and medicinal herb production

Spend trend: Consumption survey to include electronics, online shopping

How much did you spend on hand sanitizers? What did you purchase online? India will now be keeping tabs on your spending online, electronic products such as mobile phones and Covid management products, as part of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES), which was launched last week. The results of the consumer expenditure survey are used to update the consumption basket and base revision of the Consumer Price Index. "Covid-related products such as hand sanitisers, disinfectants and fruit and vegetable washes will be covered in the survey," the official added. The revamped survey comes after the government junked the findings of the survey done in 2017-18, citing data-quality issues, after leaked reports pointed to a fall in consumer spending for the first time in four decades in that year. Moreover, the new survey questionnaire has been split into three parts that would be covered in an equal number of visits to the households.

India's consumer electronics industry is set on the path to Industry 5.0

By 2025, the manufacturing sector will breach the $1 trillion mark, positioning India on the global manufacturing map. Even as the pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of economies, it is time to analyse India's manufacturing playbook and see it transition from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0, comprising smart artificial intelligence-enabled factories.  The latest episode of Mint Zetwerk Smart Manufacturing dialogue, titled The Next Frontier in Consumer Electronics-Digitally Driven, in partnership with Zetwerk, delved into why digitization is important to the consumer electronics industry's growth. It also highlighted how big players can leverage new technologies to bring in speed and agility into the ecosystem. Lokesh Payik, partner, Bain and Co. moderated the session. While enterprises are building smart and connected manufacturing set-ups, sustainability and a zero-waste policy also fare high on the agenda of a vast majority. Enterprises are shifting their products from linear to circular, keeping the sustainability goals high.

How UBON is Vying to Capture a Major Share in the Gadget, Accessory, & Consumer Electronics Segment

UBON, headquartered in Delhi, was incorporated in 1999 with a vision to address the need for 'Connected Consumers' and 'People on the go'. The brand is known for its products such as Bluetooth speakers and headphones, chargers, cables, car accessories, care products, and surge protectors to name a few. He realized the lack of serious intervention of branded players for the masses in the mobile phone accessories segment, which is a rapidly growing niche in India. Thus, UBON manufactures quality gadgets at an affordable price by focusing on both - the right assembly of equipment combined with well-built quality. The brand caters to every type and every category of the consumer, by providing a wide range of more than 126 products and accessories.

Rupee slide, demand slump double whammy for consumer electronics firms

The depreciating rupee has amplified concerns for consumer electronics brands and retailers already coping with a slump in consumer demand brought on by the economic slowdown.  The rupee breached the 80 mark against the dollar on Tuesday. The domestic currency has depreciated 25% since December 2014, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman told the Lok Sabha on 18 July. "The rupee slide is the biggest pain right now for manufacturers and brands both," said Arjun Bajaj, chief executive of Daiwa, a homegrown TV brand. Industry analysts said the slide in the value of the rupee has made it difficult for brands to lower prices. A high dollar price means components will become significantly more expensive, said Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint. With a renewed focus on manufacturing, firms in India import components like integrated circuits, memory chips and displays. These components make up a significant part of the cost of manufacturing consumer electronics products.

Kerala hopes to exceed official target of 1 lakh registered MSMEs to 1.5 lakh in FY23

The Kerala government is expecting to surpass its official target from 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh registered MSMEs in FY23, said Industries, Law and Coir Minister P Rajeev. During Q1FY23 about 42,300 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) got registered in the state. He said this after inaugurating a new facility of Innovature at Infopark Phase 2 SEZ in Kakkanad last week.  In the previous fiscal year Kerala had only 17,300 MSMEs registered in the whole year. Owing to the geographical location of the state, he said the government encourages industrial projects requiring less land.  Focused on Japanese clients, Innovature, with 500 employees and working space of 20,000 square feet, is targeting a growth of 2,000 employees by 2025. He spoke about the exemptions that are now available for non-IT startups which their IT counterparts enjoy. "The state government has decided to provide certain discounts even to non-IT businesses with 10 acres of land, along with a grant of Rs 3 crore," he added.

Indian Printed Circuit Board Industry & Market Research Report

The evolution of miniaturization and sub-miniaturization in the design of electronic equipment led to the emergence of a new technique of inter-component wiring and assembly known as the printed circuit board (PCB). This technology has now become the backbone of electronic devices. They provide the required mechanical support structure and electrical connect for the circuit. In addition to providing the connectivity, they also help to reduce the overall size and enhance the efficiency of the device.

  • By 2020, the electronics market in India is expected to increase with a CAGR of 25.1 per cent to USD 400 billion from USD 104 billion in 2015

  • Currently only 35% of this demand is currently being met by local manufacturers. And for the rest 65%, India is still dependent on imports.

  • Hence, PCB- being the backbone of electronics holds a huge demand in India - Current demand of USD 2.01 Billion represents the demand based on the total PCBs (which includes both the bare board PCBs and the populated PCBs)

  • Current market size for bare PCBs is USD 1.2 Billion - Only 30% of this demand for bare PCBs is currently being met by local PCB manufacturers. And for the rest 70%, India.
